Description

c. ANDREWS, In. GALF WEANEB.
(Applicatio Patented Oqt. I, l90l.
TATES ATENT FFEQEQ CHARLES ANDREWS, JR, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ANDREWS WIRE dc IRON WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
CALF-WEANER.
S?ECIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 683,873, dated October 1, 1901.
Application filed August 27, 1900. Serial No. 28,289. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, CHARLES ANDREWS, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of \Vinnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oalf-lVeaners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a calf-weaner in which a combined head and chin band is formed of a single piece of wire and to which is rigidly attached a nose-loop and means for securing the weaner to the head of the calf.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved calf-weaner. Fig. 2is a view of the weaner'as seen from the head end.
The weaner is preferably composed of a combined head and chin band of substantially oval shape and formed from a single piece of wire, the upper portion 1 being the headband and the lower portion 2 being the chinband. A U-shaped nose-loop 3 is connected at its ends to the parallel portions of the combined head and chin band and is the dividing-line separating the band into its head and chin sections. A brace 4t connects directly with the outer end of the nose-loop and the upper portion of the head-band. A wire-netting 5 covers that portion of the weaner between the head-band and nose-loop. To the combined head and chin band are pivotally connected two ears, each ear composed of an arm 6 at its upper portion loosely encircling the head-band and an elongated loop portion 7 at its lower end encircling the chin-band, the construction of said ears being such that a sort of pivotal mounting is obtained, whereby the vertical wires of the combined head of which the weaner is attached to the head of the calf. By means of the ears pivoted to the main frame and the loops guided in connection with the mainframe the main frame can rise and fall, which permits the calf to eat from the ground, but prevents it from sucking.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a calf-weaner, of two ears pivotally connected thereto, each of said ears being provided at its lower end with an elongated opening loosely embracing the weaner whereby the front portion of the latter may have a rising-and-falling movement independent of the ears, and means attached to the ears and adapted to pass over the head of a calf'for securing the weaner in position.
2. A calf-weaner comprising a rigid frame composed of acombined head and chin band, and nose-loop, and a wire -netting covering that portion of the weaner between the headband and nose-loop, and two ears pivotally connected to the weaner, each ear being provided at its lower end with an elongated loop portion loosely engaging the vertical wires of the combined head and chin band whereby the front portion of the weaner is permitted to rise and fall for the purpose specified.
