SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,378, dated April 11,1893.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Soranton City, in the county of Greene and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Calf- Weaner, of which the following is a specilication.

My invention relates to improvements in that class of calf-weaners employing muzzles designed to drop over the nose and mouth of the animal when the head is erect, and to yield or swing upward when the head is lowered for the purpose of permitting him to feed and the muzzle brought in contact with the ground.

The objects and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear and be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of the muzzle, the same being applied to the head of a calf. Fig. 2 is a similar View, the head of the calf being lowered and the muzzle swung to the front to permit of feeding.

Like .numerals of reference indicate like parts in both the figures of the drawings.

The muzzle consists, as is usual, of the two semi-circular or bow-shaped frames, designated as the upper frame l, and the lower frame 2, disposed at an angle to each other and preferably formed integral, the same at their angles or junctions being twisted to form eyes 3. These frames are connected by a central wire 4, and the whole covered by a reticulated covering 5. This forms a muzzle or hood adapted to loosely embrace and take over the muzzle of the animal, and drop down below the mouth. A chin-bail 6, of Ll-shape, and preferably formed of wire, is employed, and the same has its terminals passed through the eyes 3, said terminals extending beyond the eyes and given a coil to form eyes 7, that interlock with the eyes 3, and hence form a loose connection therewith. Above the eyes 7 the terminals are disposed at a right-angle to the lower portion of the chin-wire or bail, namely, rearward, forming the branches 9, and these branches attheir extremities are bent to form elongated loops 10. Connected to the loops at one end and to the intermediate portions of the frame-section l at their other end is a pair of chains ll, which are of such length as will permit of the chin-bail and muzzle being swung at a right angle to each other. This completes the construction of thedevice, with the exception of the headstall or strap 12, whose terminals are connected to the elongated loops ll and are adj usted by a buckle 13.

In operation the muzzle is placed over the calfs nose and the head-stall adj usted in rear of his ears. The limiting-chains are connected at such point to Ythe muzzle as that the muzzle is equally balanced when suspended by the chains, and hence it follows that the bail being hinged loosely to the angle of the muzzle the strain or entire support of the muzzle will fall upon the chains. When the calfs head is erect the chains limit the downward movement of the muzzle so as to entirely cover the calfs mouth; but when the head is lowered the chains slacken and thus permit of the upward swinging of the muzzle when it contacts with the ground, said muzzle moving on the hinge or loose connection between the chin-bail land itself.

It will be seen that there are no sharp points or other obstructions that are at all likely to injure the calf or cow, and that the muzzle may be worn with comfort.

Having described my invention, what I claim is* l. In a calf-Weaner, the combination with the muzzle having the rear angles terminating in eyes, the chin-bail connected loosely to the eyes, the head-stall strap connected at its ends to the chin-bail adjacent to the muzzle, and the short limiting chains connected to the muzzle above its'angles and to the headstall, substantially as specified.

2. In a calf-weaner, the combination with the muzzle, provided at its angles with eyes, the wire bail of U-shape having its terminals passed through the eyes and bent to form coils or eyes, said terminals beyond the eyes being extended at a right angle to the bail and bent at their extremities to form elongated loops, limiting chains between the loops and rear end of the frame of the muzzle, and a head-stallstrap having its terminals connected to the said elongated loops, lsubstantially as specified.
