ERNEST A. CALLING, OF BRADY, NEBRASKA.
HARVESTER.
QEECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,243, dated November 3, 1903.
' Application filed September 4, 1903. Serial No. 171,920. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST A. CALLING, residing in Brady, in the county of Lincoln and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harvesters, more definitely stated an improved attachment for reapers, headers, and other harvesting-machines, having for its object to lift the fallen grain and carry it into the path of the cutting apparatus.
The invention consists. in the improved construction and arrangement of parts constitilting the attachment, which will hereinafter be fully described, and the novel features thereof pointed out in the subjoined claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a detail top plan View of a portion of the finger-bar of a harvester, showing my attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the parts shown by Figs. 1 and 2 looking from the grain side of the harvester.
In practicing my invention I employ extension guards or fingers extending forward two feet, more or less, beyond the ordinary guardfingers, which are made adjustable for shorter or greater length to meet the requirements of the different kind or conditions of the grain.
The extension-fingers above mentioned are constructed of a steel rod A A, which is bent substantially U-shaped and with each end thereof forming a finger B, as will be fully understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of my drawings; It will be noticed that theportion A'- of the rod is adapted for arrangement parallel with the finger-bar O and is secured thereto by eyebolts D, which latter extend up through the finger-bar.
secured by nuts E on their upper ends. (See Figs. 1 and 3.) On the parallel portions A of the rod of which my extension-fingers are constructed I arrange a peculiar casting F, perforated at G, adapted to receive and allow sliding adjustment of the finger portions A. The castings F are also provided with sockets The eyebolts D are H, adapted to receive the point of a guardfinger I, substantially as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be noticed that the parallel finger portions A and intermediate portion A are formed from one rod and that in constructing the finger portions A they are bent at J J to conform to the under side of the guard-fingers I, substantially as shown in Fig. 3. From the point J in the rod the portions A extend forward with a slight downward bend to the extreme forward end of the extensionfinger. At the point K the rod is curved upward and extended backward to a point over the finger-bar O,forming a yielding member L.
If desired, the space between me portion A and the member L at the forward end of my extension-finger may be closed by any suitable plate Mand the parts be braced by a rod N.
While I have shown two extension-fingers constructed from one length or rod, obviously they may be separate or without connection as by the intermediate portion A.
Special advantage exists'in my invention over all similar extension-fingers known to me in the facility with which it may be adjusted, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the secure fastening means provided therefornamely, the eyebolts D and my peculiar castings F.
In adjusting my extension-fingers the cast ings F are forced hack free from the point of the fingers I and the nuts E turned, loosening the eyebolts. When the desired adjustment of the extension-finger is efiected, the casting is restored to the position shown on the finger I and the nut E secured down, tightening the eyebolt, as will be understood.
Having thus described my invention, what' I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with an extension-finger for harvesters, fastening means consisting of 2. Extension fingers for harvesters 0011-" ings, substantially as and for the purpose set structed of a rod bent substantially U-shaped forth.
and with the ends of the said 'rod bent into w shape, each forming an extension-finger, and I ERNESI CALLING 5 means for fastening the said extension-fin- Witnesses:
