Description

Nirnn STATES PATENT FFKQE.
MAX JOHh AHLGRIM, OF ROSE LA\VN, INDIANA.
CALF-WEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of L Letters Patent No, 291,660, dated January 8, 1884.
Application filed August 14, 1883. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAX J. ArILeRmnof Rose Lawn, in the county of Newton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Calf-leaner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of a half-muzzle of wire armed with pointed barbs, and arranged over the nose of the calf on pivots of a halter at the cheeks, and balanced by a weighted arm, so that when the calf raises the nose to suck the points will be pressed against the cows udder by the calf s nose, and when the calf holds the head in the natural standing position,
orlower, the said halfmuzzle will swing clear of the nose, so as not to interfere with feeding or be a cause of annoyance to the calf, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificatiomin which similar letters of reference indicate cor-' responding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a calf s head in the natural standing position with my improved weaner attachment applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the nose being lifted up as for sucking the cow; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the weaner detached from the calf s head.
At or about the junctions of the nose-strap a and the throat-strap b, with the cheek-straps o of a common halter fitted to the calf s head, I arrange stud-points d, forming barbs, and also forming pivot-studs for a wire yoke, c, which extends around the end of the nose with sufficient clearance at said end for swinging clear of the nose to support barbs f, and between the pivots d and the bow at the end of the nose I arrange a bow, g, in connection with the two members of the yoke and extending over the nose from side to side of the yoke. This how is connected with the bow of the front end of the yoke by two curved wires, 2 for stays, the whole making a half-muzzle for the support of said barbs f, and others, j, to prick the udder of the cow, and thus prevent the calf from sucking. The yoke 6 has another yoke, 7.", formed on it, and extending from the eyes Z downward under the throat of the calf nearly at a right angle and a sufficient length to balance the yoke e in a horizontal plane, or thereabout, by a weight, on, so that the nose of the calf will drop clear of the weaner, except when raised in the position for sucking. I also prefer to connect the pivots Z of the yoke c with a yoke, a, extending under the throat or lowerjaw; but this may be used ornot, as preferred.
This device will effectually accomplish the desired purpose without injury to the calf or material inconvenience. The wires forming the half-muzzle may be varied to some extent in their arrangement, if desired.
I do not mean to limit myself to the use of wire in the construction of the above-described weaner, but may prefer to use flat bar-iron, particularly for the yokes e and k, with holes punched for the eyes Z for the pivots d. The bow 9 may also be of flat bar, and said how and bow 6 may have eyes punched for the pivots j and f, formed on stays t of flat bar, to project through for being more substantially supported against being wrenched off against the fence, trees, and other objects; and if preferred the whole device, except the throatyoke 12, may be made in malleable iron.
It is to be noted that the studsd are formed on the throat-yoke a and pass through the halter and eyes Z so as to be well supported.
In practice the throat-strap b of the halter will have a buckle for adjusting it to the size of the calf to which the device is to be at- 'tached.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The improved calf-weaner consisting of a half-muzzle, made of wire or other suitable material, armed with barbs and arranged over the nose on pivots d of a halter, located at the cheeks, and provided with a balanceweight, holding said muzzle above the nose, except when raised to suck, substantially as described.
The combination, in a calf-weaner, of the yoke e, nose-bow g, stays 1?, balance-yoke k, and weight m, with a halter having pivotstuds (1, said yoke e and nose-bow gbeing provided with barbs, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in aca1f-weane13 of the n, having studs d passing through said eyes yoke e, nose-bow g, stays i, balance-yoke 70, from the inside, as shown and described. Weight m, and the throat-yoke 01, forming pivot-studs d and fastening to halter, said yoke 6 MAX JOHN AHLGRIM.
5 and bow 9 being provided with barbs, substa11- tially as described. Witnesses:
4:. In a calf-weaner, the combination, with C. A. HARRINGTON,
the yokes e k, having eyes 7, of the throat-yoke GEORGE SEITZINGER.
