To all whom z'tmay concern Be it known that I, WADE JOHNS N, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spencer,in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Restrainers, of which the following is a specification,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings. I I

My present inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in animal restrainers and has particular reference to those of the type worn by cows.

The principal objectof the invention is to provide a restrainer which maybe readily applied to a cows neck and provided with spiking or jabbing prongs which are positioned on each side of the cows shoulder and are adapted to jab or prick the same, in

case she swings her head in an endeavor to reach her udder.

A more specific object of the invention is to provide a restrainer of the character specified which includes a yoke which may be applied to the cows neck and a plurality of spiking prongs which are carried by the yoke and are adjustably secured thereto so that they may be properly positioned on different cows. i

The above, and other incidental objects of a similar nature, which will be hereinafter more specifically treated are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form part of this ap plication.

With reference to the drawings, wherein there has been illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention, as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the device applied to a cow; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the restrainer; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view.

As best disclosed as an operative entirety in Fig. 1 of the accompanyingdrawings, the restrainer includes a pair of yokes 10 and 11, a pair of connecting plates 12 and 13, by means of which the yokes are connected to each other, and a plurality of spiking prongs 14 which are connected to the rearwardly disposed yoke 10 and are adapted to operate in a manner to be hereinafter described.

The connecting bars are similar in construction and each includes, as best shown in detail in Fig. 2 a substantially rectangular body portion 15, and a transverse head plate 16, from the terminals of which extend the right angularly directed parallel cars 17. The head plates of the connecting bars are secured by bolts, rivets or equivalent fastening devices, as indicated at 18 to the rearwardly disposed yoke 10 and to the side portions or arms thereof, as in Fig. 2. The forward ends of the connecting bars of the body portions are pivotallv connected as by bolts or similar devices 19 to the arm portions of the forward yoke 11. Each yoke member is accompanied by a buckle and billet, as indicated at 20 and 2-1, so that the yokes may be secured upon the cows neck.

The upper and lower faces of the upper and lower ears respectively of each head plate are provided with ratchet teeth 22. The inner ends of the prongs 14 are pro vided with integral disks 23 which are also provided on one face with ratchet teeth 24. The disks of the prongs are mounted upon the ears of the connecting bar head plates and are disposed with their ratchet teeth in engagement with the ratchet teeth 22. Bolts indicated at 25 are passed through each disk and its associated ear for holding the two members in engagement with each other. From the foregoing description, it will be readily apparent that the prongs may be ad justed to space their pointed terminals different distances,whereby the device may be accommodated to cows of different sizes. The prongs are preferably given a slight longitudinal curvature.

Reference is now had particularly to Fig. 1, in which the device is illustrated in use. In this figure it will be seen that a pair of prongs is disposed on each side of the cows head so that in case the cow endeavors to suck her own udder, she will be restrained from so doing by the prongs which will pierce or stick the tender portions of her shoulders.

l/Vhile it is preferable that the yoke 11 be free for pivotal movement relative to the members 15, it is of course possible, when conditions make it advisable, to secure the member 11 against movement with respect to the members 15 by tightening the nuts upon the bolts 19. A further feature to be noted is that the prongs 14: may be ad usted to allow the cow to move her head the various minor changes in the details of con-' struction, proportion and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.

What is claimed is 1. An animal restrainer including a pair of neck yokes adapted to embrace the animals neck, a pair of plates connecting the yokes, the plates being rigidly secured to one yoke and being pivotally attached to the other yoke, and a plurality of spiking prongs carried by one of the yokes.

2. An animal restrainer including a pair of yoke members, connecting plates extending between the yoke members, one of said yokes being fixed to the terminals of the connecting plates, the other of said yokes being pivotally supported between the other terminals of the plates, and a plurality of spiking prongs attached to the first mentioned yoke and mounted for adjustment whereby the terminals of the prongs on opposite sides of the yoke may be spaced different distances from each other.

3. An animal restrainer including apair of yokes, plates connecting the arms of the yokes, and a plurality of spiking prongs attached to the rear terminal of each plate,

4. An animal restrainer including a pair of yokes, plates connected in the arms of the yokes, one of said yokes being relatively fixed to the rear terminals of the arms, the other of said yokes being pivotally supported between the forward terminals of said plates, lateral ears extending from the rear terminals of each plate, and a plurality of piercing prongs having theinterminals rotatably mounted upon the said ears, whereby the free ends of the prongs may be adjusted to different angular positions to ac commodate the restrainer to animals having shoulders of different widths.

5. An animal restrainer including a yoke adapted to be disposed upon the forward portion of the animals neck, a yoke adapted to be disposed at the base of the animals neck, a pair of connecting plates, the second mentioned yoke being relatively fixed between the rear terminals of the plates, the first mentioned yoke being pivotally supported .between the forward terminals of the plates, said plates being provided at their rear terminals with horizontally extending apertured ears, each of said ears being provided on one face with ratchet teeth, a plurality of spikingprongs, each of said prongs being provided with a disk at one terminal, saiddisk being provided with ratchet teeth, the disks of the prongs being adapted to seat upon the earswith the teeth of the disk engaging with the teeth of the ears, and. clamping bolts passing through each ear and its associated disk for securing the prongs in adjusted position.
