To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SONE, a citizen of the United States,.residing at Terrell, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas,

have invented a new and useful Calf-Weaner,

of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to muzzles 0r weaners adapted for calves and colts, the object in view being to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient means of attachment for securin g a barbed frame to a halter, whereby the frame is maintained in the operativeposition without interfering with the adjustment of the members of the halter to suit the size of the head of the animal.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a device embodying my invention applied in the operative position to a halter and secured thereby to the head of an animal. Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective of the device and attached halter. 1

1 is a barbed frame, which in the construction illustrated in the drawings, comprises a base-loop 2, provided at intervals with integral coiled eyes 3, an arched loop 6, connectin g the sides of the base-loop and terminating in barbs or points, which are engaged with two of the eyes on the base-loop, said arched loopbein g provided at intervals with eyes similar to those on the base-loop, and a spider 7, consisting of crossed bowed wires soldered together at their intersecting points and terminating in barbs or points, which are engaged with the eyes on the arched loop and the intermediate eyes of the base-loop.

The sides of the base-loop are extended to the rear to form parallel arms provided with terminal upstanding integral extensions 4, coiled eyes being'arrangedat the extremities of the extensions at and at the angles between the arms and the extensions. These eyes at the opposite ends of the extensions 4: are

, adapted for engagement by rivets to secure the barbed frame to a halter, and in order that the extensions may maintain their posi tions approximately at right angles to the plane of the base-loop I employ inclined braces 5, provided at their rear upper extremities with eyes registering with the eyes at the upper extremities of the extensions 4 and at their lower front ends with lateral barbs or points which engage two eyes 3 on the baseloop.. The barbs or points at the lower front ends of the braces 5 are soldered in the eyes of the base-loop, as also are, the barbs or points at the extremities of the arched loop and the similar barbs or points at the extremities of the arms of the spider.

The halter S, which is shown in the drawings, comprises a throatstrap 12, provided with suitable adjusting devicessuch as a buckle, cheek-straps 10, connected by means of a buckle and adapted to extend over the head of the animal, and a face-strap 11, connected by means of a buckle 16 with a loop 15, through which the throat and cheek straps extend-whereby the point of connection of the face-strap with the cheek and throat straps may be varied to suit the adjustment of the said parts of the halter, the lower extremities of the cheek-straps being connected by means of loops 13 with a nose-strap 9, also provided with an adjusting-buckle. The barbed frame is secured solely to the cheek-straps by means of rivets, which extend through the eyes at the angle between the arms of the base-loop and the extensions 4 and the registering eyes at the upper extremities of the extensions and braces, said rivets extending through the cheek-straps and holding the extensions 4' parallel and approximately in contact with the cheek-straps. B reason of the points of attachment of the barbed frame with the cheek-straps being separated or spaced apart the base-loop is held at all times in a plane approximately perpendicular to the cheek-straps, whereby the movements of the animal in grazing are unobstructed. I

In order to still further insure the efficient attachment of thebarbed frame to the halter,

I preferably provide a nose band or strap 9, with guide-loops 14 arranged in advance of the points of connection of the cheek-straps with the nose-band, whereby said loops 14 engage the parallel arms of the base-loop between the angle at the rear ends of said arms and the points of connection of the braces 5 with the base-loop, and it will be seen that the nose-band may be adjusted in size without disengaging the loops 14 from the parallel portions of the arms of the base-loop and without changing the relative positions of any of the parts of the device, the loops 14: being designed to move freely upon the parallel portions of said arms.

Furthermore, inasmuch as the barbed frame is secured solely to the check-straps, said cheek-straps being loosely connected by loops at their lower ends with the nose-band, it is obvious that said frame may be moved forwardly and rearwardly upon the nose-band without disarranging the parts, said forward and rearward movement being limited by the loop 14:, with which either the extensions 4or the braces 5 may comein contact. This sliding connection of the barbed frame with the nose-band adapts the frame to yield when the barbs or points come in contact with an opposing object and thus adapt the device for performing its function efficiently without injurious results.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a device of the class described, the combination of a barbed frame having a baseloop provided with rearwardly extending parallel arms terminating in upstanding extensions, the extensions being provided at their opposite ends with eyes, inclined braces connected at their lower ends to the side arms of the base-loop in advance of the upright extensions and provided at their upper ends with eyes to register with the eyes at the upper ends of said extensions, a halter having a nose-band and cheek-straps provided with loops engaging and adapted to slide upon the nose-band, said cheek'straps being permanently secured to and parallel with the said upright extensions by rivets engaging the registering eyes of the extensions and braces and the eyes at the lower ends of the extensions, and loops 14: secured to the nose-band in advance of the cheek-straps and loosely engaging the parallel arms of the base-loop between the lower ends of the extensions and braces, whereby the forward and rearward sliding movement of the barbed frame with the cheek-straps upon the nose-band is limited by the contact of said extensions and braces with the loop 1i, substantially as specified.
