Be it known that I, MICHAEL SAGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of McLean, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hog-Traps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in traps for receiving and holding hogs for noseringing or other purposes, the object being to provide a portable hog-trap of simple construction that will operate quickly and that may be adjusted to hogs of any size.

I will describe a hog-trap embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims. j

Figure l is a perspective view of a hog-trap embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. 4

Referring to the drawings, l designates a creelhaving a door 2 at its rear end and Inounted on runners 3, so that it may be easily transported from place to place. Arranged at the front of the creel are the neck-clamping jaws 4 5. These clamping-jaws are bifurcated at their upper ends, and in these upper portions are arranged rollers 6 7, movable on a track S, attached to the front postsof the Creel.

At one side of the creel and, as here shown, attached to the track 8 is a segment-rack 9, and pivoted to the end of the track is a lever 10, having a pawl 1l for engaging with the rack. This lever extends above and below the track, and the lower end is connected, by means of a link l2, with the upper end ofthe jaw 4, while the upper portion of said lever is connected, by means of a link 13, with the upper portion of the jaw 5. The lower ends of the jaws are movable between guide-strips 14 l5. These guide-strips are extended outward from one side of the creel, and to these extended portions an angle-lever 16 is pivoted. On the outer en d of the horizontallydisposed portion of this angle-lever is a footplate 17, and from the upper end of the vertically-disposed portion a link 1S extends to pivotal connection with the lower end of the jaw 4. From the horizontally-disposed porspring serves to hold the lower portions of the jaws yieldingly separated. The lever carries a pawl 23 for engaging with a segment-rack 24E. In operation by means of the lever 10 and its connections with the jaws the said jaws may be adjusted and so held for hogs of different sizes. The lower portion ofthe jaws will be separated yieldingly to permit the passage ofthe hogs head between the same. The hog upon being driven into the creel will naturally try to escape between the jaws. As soonv as he shall have entered between the jaws pressure is to be applied to the lever 1G, which will immediately close the jaws around the hogs neck, thus securely holding him.

Vhile I have described the device as particularly adapted for holding hogs, it is obvious that it may be employed for holding calves or other small animals. The rollers at the upper end of the jaws permit of easy and quick adjustment.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A hog-trap comprising a Creel, a track at one end of the creel at the upper portion, clamping-jaws, rollers attached to said jaws and engaging on the track and means for drawing the jaws together at lthe lower portion. j v

A hog-trap comprising a creel, a track at one end thereof and near the top, clamping-jaws, rollers attached to said jaws and engaging on the track, a' lever, a link connection between said lever below its pivotal point and one of the jaws, a link connection between said lever above its pivotal point and the other of said jaws, means for holding the lever as adjusted, and means for moving the lower portions of the jaws. l

3. A hog trap comprising a creel, jaws mounted to swing at one end of said creel, guide-strips between which the lower ends of IOC the jaws are movable, an angle-lever, a link connection between the vertiealljdisposed portion of said angle-lever and one of the jaws, another angle-lever having sliding,l eonneetion with the other of said jaws, and a rod eonneetion between the two anglelevers.

4. A hog,` trap comprising a ereel, jaws mounted to swingl at one end of the ereel, gnidestrps between which the lower ends of the jaws extend, an angle-lever, a link eonnection between the vertically-disposed meinber of said lever and one of the jaws, another angle-lever pvoted to the Creel, the downwardly-disposed member of said other angle lever having connection with the other of said jaws, a spring connection between the el'eel and the l1orizontally-dispesed member of said other angle-lever, a segment-rack, a pawl carried by the said other angle-level: for engaging with said rack, and a rod Connection between the horizontallyidisposed members of the two angle-levers.
