(No Model.) j
M. E. HAMILTON & E. L. PERRIGO. ATTACHMENT FOR FINGER BARS OF HARVESTERS.
No. 334,374. Patented Jan. 12, 1886.
WITNESSES: NVENW ATTORNEYS ATENT OFFICE.
MILES E. HAMILTON AND EDWARD L. PERRIGO, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
ATTACHMENT FO R FINGER-BARS OF HARVESTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,374, dated January 12, 1886.
Application filed May 2, 1885. Serial No. 164,207. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, MILEs E. HAMILTON and EDWARD L. PERRIGO, both residents of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inAttachments to Finger-Bars of Harvesters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, andin which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved attachment for finger -bars for harvesters, showing the same attached in position for operation, the said view being taken from the lower side, so as to show the attachment in an inverted position. Fig. 2 is aplan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line w a; in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken on the line y y in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of a part of the invention.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention-relates to finger-bars for harvesters; and it has for its object to provide an attachment for the same for the purpose of lifting and conveying the grain to the platform and carrier which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
- With these ends in view, theinvention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the front end of a harvester-platform, B is the finger-bar, and O is the cutter-bar or sickle, all of which are of the usual or of any well-known construction.
D is a shaft, which is jonrnaled in suitable bearings transversely under the front end of the harvester-platform or. under the sicklebar, and one end of which is provided with an arm or crank, D, connected by a rod, E,
with the driver s seat,or some other point from whence itmay be conveniently manipulated.
F F are a series of sleeves fitted upon the shaftD and provided with slots G, fitting over studs H H upon the said shaft, whereby the said sleeves are permitted to have a limited motion independently of the said shaft. The said sleeves are provided with forwardly-extending arms I, having grooves or recesses J in their upper sides, vertical perforations K near their inner ends, and laterally-extending ears or projections L L. These sleeves, with their arms and attachments, may be cast or otherwise formed of malleable iron or other suitable material.
M M are teeth formed of elastic wire or other suitable material, and consisting of shanks N, the front ends of which are curved are extended rearwardly and upwardly, as shown at O in the drawings. The rear ends of the shanks N of the teeth are provided with 'downturned studs P P, adapted to enter the perforations K at the rear ends of the arms I of sleeves F, in the grooves J of which the said shanks are placed and secured by turning the ears or projections L L over them, as shown. The shanks N of the teeth extend from the arms I in an outward or forward direction, while the prongs O are curved rearwardly over the cutter-bar.
connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. It will be seen that the rake-teeth are entirely independent of the cutter-bar, while forming an attachment thereto, and that they will serve to raise bunched and fallen grain to the-cutting apparatus and elevate it to the platform, or to such carrying apparatus as may be used.
The construction is simple and inexpensive, and the device may be readily attached to harvesters of ordinary construction.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with the cutting apparatus of a harvester, of a transverse shaft having a series of independently-movable sleeves provided with forwardly-extending rake-teeth having rearwardly -extending prongs, substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the cutting appa- From the foregoing description, taken in,
slightly in an upward direction, whence they ratus of a harvester, of a transverse shaft having a series of studs, a series of sleeves having vertical slots working upon the said studs, and rake-teeth extending forwardly from the said sleeves and having rearwardly extending prongs, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the cutting apparatus of a harvester, of a transverse shaft, sleeves mounted upon the same and having forwardlyextending grooved arms provided with laterally-extending ears or projections and vertical perforations at their inner ends, and the rake-teeth attached to the said arms by means of downturned lugs at their rear ends, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
