UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK W. SEIDL AND MICHAEL SEIDL, OF MANITOWOG, WISCONSIN; SAID MICHAEL SEIDL ASSIGNOR TO SAID FRANK W. SEIDL.
MOWER OR REAPER ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,552, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed September 9, 1886. Serial No. 213,108. (No model.)
To @173 whom it may concern..-
Be it known that we, FRANK W. SEIDL and MIoHAEL SEIDL, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Manitowoc, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mower or Reaper Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in mower attachments, having reference more particularly to that class used in mowing peas or other crop on or lying close to the ground; and itconsists in the detailed construction, combination, and arrangement of theparts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularlypointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of our invention. 1 Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a view of a modification.
In carrying out our invention we employ a board or plank, A, to the front longitudinal edge of which is connected, by means of clam ping-bars a, the tingerbar or head A, of ordinary construction, the same having, as usual, guard-fingers a on its outer front edge.
B B are shoes or runners, of preferably wrought or malleable iron or steel, the forward ends of which are slightly curved upward, as at b, the purpose of which is to effect the lifting or raising of the peas from the ground immediately prior to their being acted upon by the cutters. From the'extreme lower forward end of each shoe or runner is an upward rearward-projecting bar, I), which at its extreme upper end is curved downward in a vertical line, the lower end of which has a small right-angular flange, 6-, which is secured to the board A by a nutted bolt, 11, passed through an aperture formed therein and in said board, which will be referred to hereinafter; or the same may be connected direct to the finger-bar. p
The lower curved flanged portion, 0, of the shoes or runners have small sockets or apertures formed in their rear ends, extending inwardly therein a short distance, wherein are fitted the ends or points of those guards, G, of the finger-bar which lie in the same vertical planes, respectively, with the shoes B, by means held in position by means of a nut screwed on said bolt. If desired, the rearwardly-extending upper bar of each shoe or runner can be extended only to about the point where the said bar is bent into its vertical portion, as shown in Fig. 3, and the same purpose will still be accomplished.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by curving the forward ends of the shoes or runners the same are prevented from running into the ground or soil, and at the same time will properly raise or lift the peas, so as to properly present the same to the action of the cut ters. I
WVc do not restrict ourselves to the employment of our invention in connection with a mower, as the same may with equal advantage be attached to a harvester, reaper, or any other similar machine.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the board or plank and the fingerbar, of the shoes or runners, each having a rearwardly and upwardly ex tended bar bent into a vertical portion at its rear and provided with a flanged end, and a lower rearwardly-extended bar, both the upper and lower bars being secured to the said board or plank by a single nutted bolt passed through said flanged ends of the bars, substantially as shown and described, said lower rearwardly-extended bar being integral with the lower curved portion of said shoe, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.

O. W. BRINK, AUGUST F. DUMKE.
