. descent Mantles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact'description of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it most nearly appertains to make, use, and practice the same.

My invention relates to an improved holder and carrier for packing and transporting that class of incandescent mantles in which the mantle is -mounted and suspended by a rod from a ferrule which is adapted to be fitted over a gas or otherV burner without handling the mantle. These lnantles thus mounted are secured within a tube, so as to be removed 'bodily from the tube and placed in position over the burner-by handling the ferrule only; and the object of my invention is to provide a means for securing the ferrule when the mantle is inserted in the tube by which the mantle and its attachments can be removed from the tube or case without danger of injuring the mantle; and it consists of a fastening device on the inside of the cover of the case, to which the ferrule of the mantle attachment can be secured, so as to hold the mantle suspended above the cover within the tube. The protecting tube or case is then slipped down over the mantle and its attachments and the cover fitted over the end of the tube or case, thus holding the mantle suspended within the case for protection. This permits the mantle and its attachments to be removed from the case by simply separating the cover from the case and gently lifting the case upward over the mantle without disturbing the mantle.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a tube with a front portion broken away to show the mantle and its mountings fastened to the cap or cover in position inside the tube. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the interior of the cap or cover and showing the ferrule with its lugs in perspective above it.

Let A represent a paper or other tube of lower or opposite end; but in practice I shall use a cap of similar construction at both ends and shall preferably seal the cap at the upper end, so that it cannot be readily removed.

The mantle device which it is intended to pack and carry consists of a ferrule or cap C, which iits over the burner and which has suspended over it the mantle D by means of a vertical rodor wire e, the lower end of which is connected with the ferrule or cap C by a short shank f, the whole forming an integral device which is ready to be fitted upon agas or other burner. To pack this mantle device within the tube A, I provide the interior bottom of the removable end cap or cover B with a clamp orfastening device in which the ferrule of the mantle-holder can be fitted, so as to hold the mantle in an upright position, so that the open-ended tube can be placed down over vthe mantle device and the end of the tube slipped inside the flange of the cap or cover. The tube is then wrapped with an adhesive sheet of paper or wrapper g, which is pasted over the flange of the cap or cover and holds it securely in place on the end of the tube.

Various devices can be used for fastening the ferrule or cap of the mantle to the inner side of the cover of the box or tube, according to the different styles of constructing and ornamenting the ferrule. The one represented in the drawings is a ring or band t', placed vertically and fastened to the bottom of the cover and having a vertical and horizontal slot j, like a bayonet-lock, on one side, in which the shank of the mantle-holder enters and is locked, while a lug or projection k on the opposite side of the ferrule enters a similar-shaped depression Z, made in the metal of the ring. In this Way I provide a socketseat which receives the ferrule and locks it IOO in position, so that the mantle and its standard are held in a firm upright position from which they can be easily removed.

When the mantle is to be removed, the surrounding wrapper is cut close to the edge of the flange of the cover and the tube is lifted o the mantle, after which the removal of the mantle is a simple operation. By this arrangement the mantle can be removed Without injury.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A packing-case for incandescent mantles comprising a case; a cap or cover for the end of the case having an exterior flange adapted to pass over the outside end of the case; a circular flange secured to the inside bottom of the cap or cover and adapted to receive the end of the ferrule of the mantle-holder inside the flange; one or more locking-notches in the circular flange and one or more projections on the ferrule adapted to enter and lock into the notches in the flange, and a sealing-strip on the outside of the packingcase overlapping the flange of the cap or cover, substantially as described.
