To ALL WHoM IT MAY concurren'v i l Be it known that I, ROBERT B. Conn, of Jersey City, in the county ofI-Iudson, and State of New Jersey,

i have invented, made, and applied to use 4a certain new and useful improvement in Filters; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 isa vertical section of my said filter as in place for use. Figure 2 is a sectional plan of the same at the line a: fr. Similar marks of reference denote the same parts. l

The object of my said invention is to furnish a cock and filter combined, in nearly the usual form of cock` or faucet. K

My invention consists in a hollow plug Vto the cock, fitted with a removable cap, and provided with a filteringdiaphragm that can he inserted or removed at pleasure when the cepis off; and when in use said filtering-V diaphragm detains any foreign matter there may be in the water passing through the cock, and the accumulation of such foreignmatter ean he delivered and the filter washed by simply reversing the plug of the cock by turning it around. y

In the drawing, ci represents the supply pipe, b'the cylinder, and c the bib of any ordinary character of cock or faucet. d i s the tapering plug, which is formed hollow, and provided with a cap, e, to screw into the upper end of the plug. fis a handle projecting from one side of the4 plug, by means of which it may he turned;

` and g is the tightening-screw or nut, by means of which the plug cl is held into the cylinder Zi. h is the filteringdiaphragm, formed of wire gauze, felt,` or other porous material, fitted to set tightly to the interior of the plug cl, and at right angles'to the water-ways When wire gauze is employed it is best to use several thicknesses, soldered together at the edges, and filed off to fit the interior of the plug. When felt is used it should he supported between wire gauze or plates of perforated metal. p

It will be evident that the cylindrical plug d acts in the same capacity as the.ordinary plug of a cock, and that the filter will retain foreign matter, and can be reversed as aforesaid for cleaning.v

The filtering-diaphragm can be taken out with facility for cleaning,lor when not required for use.
