Description

NITED STATES EEIcE.
' .ATENT WJOHN c. WELLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'ro HARRY o. FARWELL, or SAME PLACE.
WlNDOW-SASH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 681,009, dated August 20, 1901.
Application filed April 10, 1901. Serial No. 55,149. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN O.WELLER, a citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, in the county of Cook andState of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Window-Sashes and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a window-sash of that kind known as fireproof construction, the object being to provide a sash made of sheet metal and secure the glass in the same without the use of putty; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrat ing my invention, Figure l is a partial outside elevation of a sash constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a partial inside elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a section, on an enlarged scale, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. -Fig. 4 is a partial section, on an flange 0 about midway of the depth of said rails, said flange being c'ontinuousaround the four sides of the sash. To retain the glass D in said sash, four U-shaped members E are provided, which when placed on the edges of the glass form an auxiliary frame otherwise artistically decorated to give a finished appearance to said sash. The outer portion of said members E are formed with the outer edge turned back at an angle of about thirty degrees, thus forming a V-shaped portion H, which is adapted to fill in the corner between the outer edge of the glass and the sash and when finished has the appearance of putty. The outer edge of said 1nem bers E are again turned back inwardly upon themselves, thus forming a rounded edge I to come in contact with said sash and hiding the sharp edge J. ThelipsKofsaid U-shaped member E are formed closer together than the base, thus causing said lips to fit closely to the glass with a slight spring-pressure, and consequently when same is in place to hold said glass firmly and nearly weatherproof.
I claim as my invention 1. In a window, the combination with a sash provided with inwardly-extending flanges on its inner edges, of devices adapted each to receive one of the edges of the glass pane, each of said devices being provided with flanges adapted to pass inwardly of the inner edges of said flanges of said sash and adapted to be bent over upon and engage said. flanges to secure said glass pane in said sash.
2. In a window, the combination with a sash provided With inwardly-extending flanges, of flexible strips adapted to receive the glass pane, and flanges on said strips adapted to be bent over upon and engage the flanges of said sash to secure said pane within said sash.
3. In a window, the combination with a sash provided with inwardly-extending flanges, of
JOHN c. WELLER.
