WINDOW-SASH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 575,808, dated January 26, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALONZO D. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Costello,in the county of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sashes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, .clear, and exact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which-it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to window-sashes.

Heretofore glass panes have been fastened in the window-sash by triangular brads and puttying. This manner of fastening, and more particularly the putty part thereof, has proven unsatisfactory, owing to the fact that the same is affected by the elements and in time breaks and crumbles away, so that the pane has to be reputtied.

My object is to obviate the necessity of thus fastening window-panes and to provide a novel kind of fastening therefor which will be ornamental and cheap, as well as being more perfectly adapted to hold the pane in place, and at the same time pack it, so that the entrance of any rain or wind will be prevented. This is accomplished by the provision of a novel form of fastening device comprising certain improved features and combinations appearing more fully in the following description and appended claims and in the accompanying drawings, in whichrating-strip, are all provided with sets of pockets 3.

The numeral 4 designates screws which pass through the sash from the inside thereof and project up in the pockets. It will be observed that all portions of the outside face of the sash-frame are rabbeted, as at 5, for the reception of my improved fastening-strips, now to be described.

The numeral 6 designates one of the two vertical fastening-strips which are located at the sides of the sash. This fastening-strip is provided with an inwardl y-pro j ectin g portion 7, which extends up the frame between the upper and lower pieces thereof and is faced with felt or other suitable material 8. This felt strip abuts firmly against the windowpane ,9, which is fitted in the sash-frame in the usual manner.

The n umerals. 10, 11, and 12 represent lugs which are adapted for reception in the pockets of the upright end of the frame, andeach lug is provided with a screw-threaded pocket 13, which receives one of the screws. The strip is cut away, as at 14 and 15, at its ends for the reception of the tongues of the short cross fastening-strips. A central upright fastening-strip 16 is employed, which is of the same construction as the strip just described, but is provided with an additional depending portion 7, so that two of these portions will be provided, one abutting on one pane and the other on the other pane. One of the four crossstrips is designated by the numeral 17, and this is also provided with a lug of the same construction as those heretofore described, and it likewise has a depending strip provided with a piece of felt. This cross fastening-strip has two thin tongues 18 and 19 at its ends, one of the tongues being received in the cut-away portion at the end of the end fastening-strip and the other tongue fitting into the recessed portion of the metal upright fastening-strip.

It is not necessary that the portions of the sash-frame be recessed or rabbeted for the reception of the fastening-strips, although it is my preferred construction, inasmuch as the fastening-strips are thus made to lie flush with the plane of the sash. My improved fastening-strips are preferably constructed of metal and can be made as ornamental as desirable. After they have been placed in position the screws are turned, and as they are received in the'pockets of the lugs the fastening-strips are drawn to the sash and the felt strips pressed tightly against the panes, so that the latter are firmly held in position and cannot rattle, while it is impos sible for any rain or wind to pass through the sash.

It is obvious that slight and immaterial changes of construction might be resorted to without departing from the advantages of my invention, and it is to be understood, therefore, that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown and described, but consider that I am entitled to all such variations as come within the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. I11 a window-sash provided with a series of pockets, the combination with a windowpane, of a fastening-strip abutting on the pane and having lugs that are provided with screw-threaded pockets, said lugs projecting into the pockets of the sash, and screws passing through the sash and into the pockets of the lugs.

2. In a window-sash provided with a series of pockets, the combination with a windowpane, of a fastening-strip having a depend ing portion which abuts against the pane, a strip of packing connected to said depending portion, lugs connected to the strips and provided with screw-threaded pockets, said lugs projecting into the pockets of the sash and screws passing through the sash and into the pockets of the lugs.
