Description

E. D. MERRIAM AND SETE ALDRIGELOF LA GRANGE, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 68,098, dated August 27, 1867.
IMPROVBD BED-BOTTOM SPRING.
@Le tlgetrle totdat tu tu tLicte ettus tteitt mit nrzrltitg plut nt tige tutti.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, E. D. MERRIAM and SETH ALDRICH, of La Grange, in the county of Lorain, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful improvements in- Spring-Becl Bottoms; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of one end of a slat, with the spring attached, together with a section of the side Vrail of the bedstead, and
Figure 2 is a side'vie'w of the same.
Like letters refer to like parts.
Our invention relates to the mode of attaching the elastic spring to both the slet and rail. The end of each slat A is provided with a metallic clasp, B, which consists of a strap of iron or other metal, :and is secured to the end of the rail by screws or rivets. At the bend it is fitted to receive the pin C, which `forms a'point of attachment for the hingearound which the elastic band passes, and consists of a Wire, having a straight section equal in length -to the width of the elastic band, the ends being turned at right angles to the bar, and embracing the ends of the pin C. The rail F is provided with two eyes G G, which pass through the rail and are clinched u'pon the opposite side. .A wire rod,H, passes through these eyes, thus forming a pin, which receives the elastic band E. This band E consists of a piece of elastic ribbon, of suitable strength, which passes around both pin H and hinge D, inthe form of an endless belt, or the twoends may overlap, as shown in fig. 2, and be secured by stitching. By means ofthe hinge or loop D, the elastic band is not liable to be cut or Worn out, in connection with the slot and rail, as in the ordinary mode of attachment.
We claim for our mode of construction, as set forth, superiority in'cheapness, pleteness, as compared with other modes of making spring-bottom bedsteads. the equivalents of the parts composing the arrangement of our springnumcrous patents have been granted for bed-bottoms supported on elastic bands by various devices, as therein sot forth and claimed, and we expressly disclaim the various arrangements thus covered.
What ive do claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The clamp D, attached to the slat A, and enclosing the rod C, in combination with the looped hinge D, elastic band E, rod Il, and staples G, fastened to the rail F, when said several parts are respectively con structcd, and the whole arranged for use substantially as and lfor the purpose set forth.
E. D. MERRIAM, SETH ALDRICH.
combined with equal com- We do not claim broadly for bottom bedstead, for tvc are aware that Witn esscs:
