TQ ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. P. R. JAMES, ot' Pepin, in the county of Wabnshaw, and in the VState of Minnesota, have invented a'eertain new and useful devieercalled a Hand-Catch, and do hereby declare that the following is a fu'll, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, rpaking part of this specification, A represents the body of the catch, which is made of metal or of wood, recording to what it is designed to use it for. This body consists of' a block or bar two or three inches in lengthyvilth slots or openings out in each end so :is to form fourprojecting arms. In the under side of the upper arms are out grooves cl el, which have a square shoulder at their outer extremity and slope o` inward. A slot is out between the two lower arms, and pivoted between them are two three-cornered catches B B. One corner of the catches B catches into the grooves d (Z, and against their shoulder one oorne'r catches against a spring, C, and one corner serves as a. handle for operating the catch. C represents a. spring which lies in a groove on one side of the body A, with its ends operating against the cornerse e ot'gthe 'catches B.v
This hand-catch may be used for a variety of purposes, for a snap-hook, oar-coupling, (if made large enough,) clothes-pins, and for links for mending broken chains. When used 'as a clothes-pin, one end is caught upon the line and the other holds the clothes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claiin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The body A, constructed as described, and provided with the catches B B and spring C, substantially asy and for the purpose specified. i
In testimony that I cla-im the foregoing as my own invention, I have hereunto set my hand4 this 16th day' of January, 1867.
