UNlllfhD Srrrrns Patient @rricn,
JESSE NEWBAUER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
WAlST -LlNlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,675, dated August 13, 1901.
Application filed June 5, 1900. Serial No. 19,177. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn NEWBAUER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, in the State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Close-Fitting Vaist- Linings for Ladies Wear, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved closefittin g waist-lining for Wrappers, shirt-waists, and other similar garments for ladies wear; and the invention has for its object to provide a waist-lining that will adjust itself or accommodate itself without alteration to different measurements of bust and waist, whereby the same garment will fit several different persons who may vary in dimensions of bust or waist, or both, and where the other measurements of the garment-such as the neck, the sleeves, and the length of waist or skirt-are suitable.
To this end my said improvement consists in a waist-lining of the close-fitting kind formed of inelastic material and having inserted bust and waist sections of elastic material in the front, said elastic sections extending from the waist-line to points above the bust and opposite the armpits, but no higher, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.
The following description explains at length the manner in which 1 construct, apply, and produce this improved Waist-lining, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents, in front View, a close-fitting waist-lining for a ladys wrapper formed in accordance with my invention, the garment proper covering the waist-lining being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a back view of the waist-lining.
The front sections a, the back 1), and the sides 0 of the waist-lining are formed of ordinary lining material, such as cotton fabric, which is practically inelastic, and the parts are out to size according to the pattern used and meet over the shoulders and beneath the armpits.
In each front section CL of the body is inserted in an opening cutaway on corresponding outlines a pear-shaped sect-ion cl of elastic material, with the large end of curvilinear outline at the top and with the contracted portion extending downward therefrom to the waist-line.
The elastic section dis united to the inelastic material composing the front (t by a lapseam and rows of stitching along the edges, and the top, being approximately circular in outline 0r corresponding to the segment of a circle, is so placed that the chord or the great est horizontal diameter thereof is situated on a transverse line extending across the front from one armpit to the other and on a median line running through the center of the bust or substantially on such line. The specific location of the widest portion of the elastic section (Z at this point prevents the lining from cutting the wearer under the arms and causes it to accommodate itself to abnormally large busts. tracted portion of the elastic section extends downwardly in gradually-converging lines to the bottom of the waist. In this form the curvilinear or rounded outline of the section (IV, surrounding or taking in the projecting breast portion, will by virtue of its elastic quality stretch to a greater or less degree, corresponding to the size of the bust, while the contracted portion (Z below, yielding in like manner, will allow the lining to expand on the waist-line.
Knit or woven ribbed fabric is a good material to use for the sections (1, as the same has the advantage of being washable and will ordinarily be found to possess the desired elastic quality and to retain it to a degree sufficient to draw and retain the waist to a proper fit.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A waist-lining for ladies wear consisting of From this top portion the conthe back, sides, and front sections of inelastions continuing downwardly from the breast tic material meeting over the shoulders and to the bottom of the waist. 10 under the armpits; and the inserted sections In testimony that I claim the foregoing I of elastic material in the front, said elastic have hereunto set my hand and seal.
