CLEVIS.
(Apphcation filed Fab. 1, 1901.)

&
UNITED STATES ELMER T. HISEY, OF EAST PALESTINE, OHIO.
PATENT OFFICE.
CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 680,529, dated August 13, 1901.
Application filed February 1, 1901. Serial No. 45,568. (No model.)
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER T. HISEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East Palestine, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olevises, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a clevis, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby the same may be easily opened, closed, and retained in a locked position.
The invention further consists in a clevis that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and, furthermore, one that will be highly efficient in its use.
The invention further consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail referonce is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference, indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved clevis. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the jaws-in an open position. Fig. 3 is aside elevation, partly in Vertical section, of the movable jaw. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the stationary jaw, partly in vertical section. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the clevis, taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the movable jaw, carrying a hook portion 2, and is provided with an opening 3, and at its lower end is formed with an annular recess 4, having secured therein a shaft 5, formed integral with the movable jaw 1. This shaft carries on its end an engaging lug 6.
The reference-numeral 7 represents the stationary jaw, carrying the hook portion 8, to which is secured the lug 9, adapted to fit in and engage the opening 3 of the hook portion 2. The hook portion 8 is slightly cut away, as shown at 10, to receive the hook portion 2 of the movable jaw. The stationaryjawcarries a tubular extension 11, is pivoted to the shaft 5, and seats itself in the annular recess 4. An annular recess 12 is arranged in the stationary jaw, in which is secured a spring 14, the latter being adapted to operate against the lug 6 of the shaft 5 and lock the two jaws together when closed. The lug 9, engaging in the opening 3, will serve as additional securing means against any strain that may be brought to bear against the sides of the clevis.
The operation of my improvedclevis will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accom panying drawings, and it will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a clevis, the combination of a movable jaw having a recess and an opening formed therein, a shaft secured in said recess, a lug formed on said shaft, a stationary jaw having formed therein an annular recess, a lug adapted to engage in said opening of the movable jaw, a spring secured in said recess, and a tubular portion adapted to encircle said shaft, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses- ELMER T. HISEY.
