SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,031, dated January 1, 1901.

To all whom zit may concern:
Beit known that I, AUGUST PAULSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sisseton Agency, in the county of Roberts and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to monkey-wrenches, the object being to provide improved means for locking the movable jaw of a wrench in its adjusted position. I
The Construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The reference-numeral 1 designates the shank of the wrench, formed along its inner face with ratchet-teeth 2 and having the fixed jaw 3 secured to its upper end by aA screw 4. The shank is formed on opposite sides with central longitudinal ribs 5 to guide the movement of the movable jaw 6, the latter being provided with internal grooves 7 to receive said ribs.
The movable jaw 6 is formed with a recess 8, within which is pivotally secured a lever 9, provided with a toothed projection lO, adapted to engage the teeth of the shank 1, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
At the lower end of each of the ribs 5 is a curved stop or shoulder 1l, adapted to receive the contact of ears 12, depending from the Vmovable jaw 6 to limit the downward movelug 17, projecting from the lever and having its ends 18 turned upward to engage the stops 11, and thus lock the lever 14 in clamping engagement with the lever 9, the stops being slotted at the point 19 to accommodate the ends of the bail.
A coil-spring 20 is interposed between the shank and the lever 14, the ends of the spring being held in sockets formed in the shank and lever. The function of this spring is to throw the clamping-lever 14 outward away from the shank after the bail is released.
The utility and operation of the device constructed as thus described will be readily understood. The movable jaw 6 is readily adj usted to the desired position, after which the teeth of the lever 9 are, brought into engagement with the teeth of the shank, and the clamping-lever is pressed against the lever`9 and locked by the engagement of the ends 18 of the bail with the stops 11.
I claim- 1. A wrench comprising a shank formed with teeth along one edge; a fixed jaw; a movable jaw on the shank; a toothed lever pivotally secured to said movable jaw; stops projecting from opposite sides of the shank to limit the downward movement of the movable jaw; a clamping-lever pivotally secured to the lower end of the shank; and a device for locking the clam ping-lever in engagement with the toothed lever, consisting of a bail secured to said clamping-lever and havingupturned ends adapted to engage saidstops.
2. A wrench comprising a shank formed with teeth along one edge; and with longitudinal ribs terminating in curved stops; a jaw fixed to said shank; a jaw movablepon said shank; and having depending ears; a lever pivotally secured to said movable jaw and having teeth adapted to engage the teeth of the shank a clamping-lever pivotally secured to the lower end of the shank; a locking-bail carried by said clam ping-lever and having its ends turned upward to engage said stops and a spring interposed between the shank and clamping-lever.
