BENJAMIN F. KOCH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AND JOHN YVM. COGS- WVELL, OF .HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
LID-HOLDER FOR VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,125, dated July 23, 1901..
Application filed February 11, 1901. Serial No. 46,815. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN l KOCH, a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, and JOHN M. COGSWELL, a resident of Hoboken, in the county of Hud son and State of New Jersey, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and Improved Lid-Holder for Vessels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for holding the lids of culinary vessels; and the object is to provide a device of this character that shall be simple in its construction, comparatively inexpensive, and that may be readily applied to hold a lid from slipping off a vessel, but leaving sufficient play between thelid and vessel so that liquid may be poured out upon tilting the vessel.
We will describe a lid-holder for vessels embodying our invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side View of a lid-holder embodying our invention and showing the same as applied, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the holder.
The lid-holder comprises two frame members A B, movable one upon the other. The memberA has side bars l,which are connected at the inner ends by a cross=bar 2, provided with eyes or guides 3, through which the side bars 4. of the member B slide, the said side bars 4 of the member B being also provided at the inner ends witha cross-bar 5, having eyes 6, through which the side bars 1 may slide. At the centers of the cross-bars 2 and 5 are upwardly-extended finger-pieces 7, and at the outer ends of the side bars 1 of the section A are downwardly and inwardly extended hook portions 8 for engaging underneath the flange of the Vessel, as indicated in Fig. 1. From these hook portions 8 the Wire forming the section is extended inward, as at 9, and then twisted and carried outward to form a handle 10. The outer ends of the side portions 4 of the member B have hooks 11 for engaging with the flange of the vessel, and from these hooks 11 a loop portion 12 extends inward, and from this loop portion the wire is twisted and extended outward to form a hook 13,from which a spring 14 extends to a connection with the finger-piece on the cross-bar 2.
Each frame member consists of a single length of wire, and therefore the device may be very cheaply made. The hook portions 8 and 11 will be sufficiently large to permit a slight play or movement of the lid a; of the vessel relatively to the vessel, so that liquid may be readily poured out when the vessel is tilted, and the handle 10 on the device will provide a convenient means for operating or tilting the vessel.
In operation as the finger-pieces 7 are forced toward each other the hooks 8 and 11 will be moved outward, and then when the device is placed upon a vessel and the finger-pieces released the spring 14 will force the frame members toward each other to engage the vessel, asshown in the drawings. When the holder is employed for a verylarge vessel, the spring 14 may be connected to the shank portion of the hook 13, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A lid-holder, comprising two frame-like members, each member consisting of side bars having eyes through which the side bars of the other member may slide, cross-bars at the inner ends of the side bars of the members, up wardly-extended finger-pieces on said crossbars, hook portions formed at the outer ends of the frame members, a spring extended from the outer end of one of the frame members to the cross-bar of the other member, and a handle extended from one of said other members, substantially as specified.
2. A lid-holder, consisting of two framelike sections mounted to slide one upon the other, one of said sections having at its outer end hook portions and a handle, the other frame member having hook portions at the outer end for engaging with a vessel and an I names to this specification in the presence of upwardly and outwardly extended shank or two subscribing Witnesses. hook portion, and a spring extended from BENJAMIN F. KOCH. said shank or book portion to a, connection JOHN WM. COGSWELL. 5 with the other frame member, substantially Witnesses:
as speoified. GEO. H. ENTRY, J r.,
JOHN F. OHARA.
