'TANK HEATER.
(Application filed Apr. 12, 1900.)

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. MYERS, OF HUNTERTOWVN, INDIANA.
TANK-HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 678,506, dated July '1 6, 1901.
Application filed April 12, 1900. Serial No. 12,522. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntertown, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented-certain new and useful' Improvements in Tank-Heaters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tank-heaters wherein a combustion-chamber is submerged in a water-containing tank and is provided with a protruding stack, ventpipe, and fuel-chute; and the objects of my improvement are to utilize the top and bottom as well as the vertical walls of the combustion-chamber for heating-surface and to afford means for conveniently extracting the ashes from beneath the grate.
I accomplish my objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section and Fig. 2 is a plan of the grate.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
The combustion chamber 2 is arranged upon suitable feet let within the tank 1 in a plane beneath the normal water level 21. From the top of said chamber extends a funnel-shaped chute 13, which protrudes above the top of said tank. An opening 22 is made in the top of said chamber, communicating with the chute 13 and is provided with a removable cover 11. The smoke-stack 3, having a hood 7, leads from the forward upper part of the chamber 2 to any desired height above the tank, and a draft-pipe at leads from above the water-level into the lower rear part of said chamber. The said smoke-stack and draftipe are both provided with dampers 6 and 5, respectively, for the purpose of regulating the draft.
size.
pass through said lugs.
To anchor the chamber 2 in proper position within the tank 1, I have arranged a a suitable lug 9 at the bottom of said cham her. The said rod has a fixed collar 15, which engages said lug, and the lower end of said rod is adapted to screw into or otherwise connect with the bottom of said tank.
Within the chamber 2 is arranged a grate 16, which is constructed in two parts of equal Each part is provided with lugs 18, which overlap similar lugs upon the other part rod 8 in and are loosely connected by pins 19, which The grate is supported above the bottom of the chamber upon legs 20 and has an inclined apron 17, which extends to a point above the inlet of the vent pipe 4,- which serves to direct the draft be neath the grate. It is obvious that by lift-- ing one of the parts of the grate and turning it so as to rest upon the other part the lower part of the chamber beneath the grate is made accessible for the purpose of removing the ashes which may have collected therein.
Having described. my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a tank-heater, a submerged combustionchamber; a smoke-stack protruding therefrom; a funnel protruding from and opening into the top of said chamber; a removable lid closing the top of said chamber at the bottom of said funnel; a grate supported near the bottom of said chamber and consisting of two equal parts pivoted together at points diametrically opposite; a vent-pipe leading downward and into the lower rear part of said chamber; said grate being formed with an inclined apron closing over the inlet of said vent-pipe, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
WILMER LEONARD, PATRICK E. Cox.-
