PATENT JEAN B. GAGNON, OF MONTREAL, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ARTHUR PAQUETTE, OF SAME PLACE.
' S C A O forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,336, dated July 9, 1901.
Application filed March 22, 1900. Serial No. 9,786. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J EAN BAPTISTE GAG- NON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Swings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to swings; and the object is to provide a light, durable, adjustable, and folding swing, which particularly adapts it as a portable swing.
To this end the invention includes adjustable supporting rods having suspending means secured to their upper ends and seats secured to the lower ends of the same, which are secured to and supported from said rods, as will be particularly pointed out hereinafter.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows in perspective the swing opened up and ready for use.
The seats of the swing are secured to and supported from rods B, as will be particularly described hereinafter. Each rod B is formed in two sections adjustably secured to each other, so that they may be lengthened or shortened. The lower section b of each rod has secured near its upper end a plate 3, which carries a ring J, designed to engage one of a series of transverse grooves in the face of each upper section 12, whereby the parts b are hung from parts Z). A guide-clip 2 is se cured to the lower end of each section b, which embraces sections 1), to hold the same against lateral displacement. Loops Z are secured to the extremity of each section b by means of staples x y, said loops being adapted to be engaged by supporting-hooks, &c., from which the swing depends.
The swing shown herein is provided with two seats oppositely arranged, each seat comprising front legs F, intermediately pivotally connected to the end of the adjacent rod B, backs 5, comprising side posts 0, having links (1, pivotally connecting the lower end of the same to the lower ends of legs F, side bars D, pivotally connecting the upper ends of legs F to the posts 0, centrally of the latter, and braces G, pivoted at one end to the legs (J, intermediate of the connections of links q and braces D, and having their opposite ends provided with hooks detachably engaging pins m, projecting from the rods B. The backs are further braced by pieces H, pivotally secured at their ends to each post 0 aboxe brace D and having a series of slots 1: cut in their under edges, which form with pins 3, extending inwardly from braces G, a detachable and adjustableconnection between said posts 0 and braces, whereby each back may be adjusted to hold it in a more or less vertical position.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination in a swing, a supportingrod, a front leg pivoted intermediate of its length to the end of said rod, the back, side bars pivotally connecting the lower end of the back and leg, and the upper end of the leg and the intermediate part of the back, a brace extending from the back to the rod, and a second brace extending between the back and the first brace.
2. In combination in a swing, asupportingrod, a front leg pivoted intermediate of its length to the end of said rod, a back, side bars pivotally connecting the lower end of the back and leg, and the upper end of the leg and the intermediate part of the back, a brace extending from the back between the upper and lower side bars to the rod, and a second brace pivoted to the back above the upper brace having an adjustable connection to the first brace.
3. In combination in a swing, a supportingrod, ,a front leg pivoted intermediate of its length to the end of said rod, a back, side bars pivotally connecting the lower end of the back and leg, and the upper end of the leg and the intermediate part of the back, a brace pivoted to the back intermediate of the side braces having a detachable connection to the supporting-rod, and a second brace pivoted to the back having a detachable and adj ustable connection with the first brace, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
J. B. GAGNON. LL. 3.
