Description
UNITED STATES PATENT asics,
HOWELL HANSEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ROPE-G RIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ratent No. 678,246, dated. .Tary 9, 1961. f Application filed December 29, 1900. Serial No. 41,485. (No model.)
To all whom', t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HOWELL HANsEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, inthe county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Rope-Grip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for gripping ropes or cables while holding or operating the rope or cable, and the object is to provide a device of this character that may be conveniently carried in a persons pocket when not in use and particularly adapted for the use of yachtsmen and sailors in handling ropes for raising and lowering a sail or the like and to prevent the abrasion or cutting of the hands, as sometimes results by the hands coming in direct contact with the rope.
' I will describe a rope-grip embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
` Figure 1 is a perspective view'of a ropegrip embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line on @c of Fig. 2.
The device comprises two jaws l 2, each having a tang or extension 3,pivoted together, as at 4. Each jaw in its tang portion may be made of any suitable material-for instance, cast metal-and the outer surfaces of the jaws are transversely rounded to conveniently it into a persons hands. The inner surface of each jaw is provided with a longitudinal channel 5 to embrace a rope, and these channels are gradually widened and deepen'ed from the lower to the upper or pivotal end, so that the device may closely grip ropes of different sizes, and'to cause a closer grip on the rope these channels may be provided with ribs 6. r1 he jaws are normally pressed apart by means of a spring 7, connected to one jaw and having its free end bearing against the opposite jaw, as clearly shownin Fig. 2. Each jaw, near its top, is provided with a ring 8, through which a persons thumb and finger may be inserted, as shown in Fig. l.
4In use the gripping device is to be pressed closely against the rope while pullingV upon the same, and by releasing the pressure the spring will separate the jaws sufficiently to permit the device to be moved upward along the rope or it may be wholly disconnected therefrom and the rope hauled by the usual overhand movement.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A rope or cable gripping device, comprising two jaws pivotally connected together and each provided with a longitudinal channel or groove on its inner surface, rings on the jaws for receiving a persons lingers, and a spring for moving the jaws apart, substantially as specified.
2. Arope or cableA gripping device, comprisingx two jawsprovided on their inner sur# faces with longitudinal channels, said channels increasing in depth and width from one end to the other, tangs extended from the jaws and pivotally connected together, and a spring for pressing the jaws apart, subs tan'- tially as specified.
3. A rope or cable grip, comprising two jaws pivotally connected together, and rings on said jaws through which a persons iin gers may pass, substantially as specied.
4t. A rope or vcable grip, comprising two jaws, longitudinally channeled at their inner surfaces, the said channels being provided with ribs, tangs extended from the jaws and pivotally connected together, .a spring for pressing the jaws apart, and rings on said jaws near the upper ends, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my HOWELL HANSEL.
Witnesses:
