SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,173, dated July 9, 1901.
Application tiled May 7I 1901.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JUDsoN EBEN HAGER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marinette, in the county of Marinette and State of Vtisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Grapples, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Myinvention relates to hoisting devices, generally called grapples or skidding-tongs,7 used for skidding logs and timber and also for hoisting the same. A
The object of my improvement is to provide the device with inexpensive means to promptly release the tongs from the material after it has been elevated and without requiring the lowering of the tongs. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whicl1 Figure lis a perspective view of the device, having the hinged finger on one end of its arms bent in position to carrya load. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device with the hinged finger straightened out from the arm, as when a load is released.
In said drawings, A and B represent the two arms of the grapple, hinged together on a pivot-pin O, passing through them, said pin acting as a loosely-clenched rivet to retain the arms pivotally united about one-third of the distance from their upper ends, said ends having each one an eye d to receive links, cord, or chain, by means of which the grapple can beA4 hoisted, as usual. The lower end of the arm A is bent, as usual, so that its point ci is normally facing toward the arm B; but the lower portion of said arm B has a pointed finger h, hinged thereto at c. To retain said finger b locked in the position shown in Fig. l, it is connected, by means of a pair of connecting-bars F, to a sliding bar G, the bars F having their upper ends pivoted to the lower portion of the sliding bar G. Said bar is mounted upon the arm B and is retained to said arm by means of a metal strap H, the ends of said strap being secured to the arm B. The upper end of the bar Gis connected, by means ofY a pair of bars I, with the locklever K. Said bars overlapping the sides of the arm B are steadied by the latter. The

connecting-pin t, uniting the upper ends of said bars I to the lock-lever, passes through the latter at a point above its lower end; but said lower end is pivoted at to the arm B. The upper endof lock-lever K has an eye K2, through which passes a cord m, which is secured thereto. Said cord Vis in practice of sufficient length to operate the said lock-lever from a distance, if desired, andswing it outwardly to the position shown in Fig.v 2, said operation releasing the load from the grapple.
Before taking a new load the parts are returned to the position shown in Fig. l', in which position the pointed lower ends of the arms A and B are facing each other.v
Having now fully described my invention, I claim- Y l. A grapple consisting of two 'arms hinged together, the irst arm having its pointed lower end bent toward the second arm, said second arm having a pointed finger hinged to its lower portion, a lock-lever with pivotal connection to said arm, and connecting-bars uniting the pointed finger to said lock-lever substantially as described.
2. AIn a grapple the combination of two arms hinged together, the first arm having its pointed lower end bent toward the second arm, said second arm having a finger hinged to the lower portion of said arm, a vlock-lever with pivotal connection to said arm, a sliding bar mounted on said arm, said sliding bar hav ing pivotal connection to the lock-lever and hinged finger substantially as described.
. In a grapple the combination of two arms' hinged together, the first arm having its pointed lower end bent toward the second arm, said second arm having a finger hinged to its lower portion, a lock-lever with pivotal connection to said arm, a sliding bar mounted on said arm, said sliding bar having pivotal con'- nection to the lock-lever and hinged finger, said sliding bar being loosely connected to said arm substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JuDsoN EBEN HAGERMAN.
