TO all whom it may concern:
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 1906.
1 Application filed February 19, 1906. Serial No. 801,882.
"Be it known that I, WILL R. JOHNSON, a c1t1ze n oi the United States, residing at Montfort, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, havezinvented a new and useful Pump]- Rod Lifter, of which the following is a speci cation.
This invention relates to devices for lifting pump rods or tubes from wells and for similar purposes, and has for its object to improve the construction and increase the efliciency of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in View, whichwill appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which correi 16 is pivoted at 17.
spending parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention. ca-
/ pable of carrying the same into practical op eration.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, of the improved device a v plied; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ower grip detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the base-plate detached.
The improved device comprises a base member 10, preferably of a hard-wood plank having a recess 11 in one side and with a U- shaped metal shield 12, encompassing the recess and secured in place by bolts 13. A tached to the base member is aplate 14, having spaced ears 15, between Which a link Pivoted at 18 in the-upper end of the link 16 is a bar 19, enlarged at the free end into a U-shaped pontion 20, the latter having nip-plates 21 22 for hearing by the knife-edges against the opposite sides of the rod or tube (represented at 23.) The portion of the clamp member is provided With an arm 24 for assisting in releasing the clamp when required. Attached to the base 10 is a socket 25, in which a standard 26 is rotatively mounted. Pivoted at 27 in the a standard 26 is a lever 29, having a handle 30 at one end and a link 31, pivotcdat 32, at the other end. Pivoted at 33 at the lower end of the link 31. is an arm 34:, having agrip-band 35 at the outer end for encircling the tube or rod 23. The gripband 35 is provided with knife-edges 36 37 for hearing against opposite sides of the'tube or red 23, as shown. By this simple arrangement a tube or red may be grasped by the band 35 and elevated by bearing down upon the lever 29, and when the limit of the stroke of the lever is reached the clamp member 19 20 will automatically engage the rod and hold it suspendrd, While the lever is'elevated to cause the grip-band to be engaged at a lower point, the rod or tube being thus elevated step by step, as will be obvious. a
When the tube or red 23 is being suspended by the lower or clamp member, it bears at one point against the binding member 12 and the latter thus serving in a t 0-fold capacity as a support for the base-plan r 10 and as a means coacting with the clamp member Ior holding the rod While the lifting mechanism is being adjusted to a new position.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a device 01 the class described, a base member having a lateral recess, a U-shape plate forming a bindingto said recess, a standard swinging, from said base contiguous to said recess, an arm swin ing from the iree end of said standard and having a U- sl1aped terminal for receiving the rod to be elevated, nip-plates at opposite sides of said U-shaped terminal for bearing against opposite sides of said rod, and means for elevating said rod.
2. In a device of the class described, a base member having a lateral recess, a, U-shape plate forming a binding to said recess, a standard swinging from. said base contiguous to said recess, an arm swingingd'rom the free end of saidstandar'cl and having a U-shaped terminali'or receiving the rod to be elevated,
nip-plates at opposite sides of said U-shapcd 'and coupling means between said band and lover.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto al'lixed my signature in thc presence of two witnesses.
WILL 1i. JOIIINSON.
