R. JONES.
GRAPPLE.
' No. 485,944. i Patented Nov. 8, 1892.
new:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REES JONES, OF KAUFMAN, TEXAS.
GRAPPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,944, dated November 8, 1892.
Application filed July 30, 1892. Serial No. 441,685. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, BEES JONES, a citizen of the Un ted States, residing at Kaufman, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grapples, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hoisting, and particularly to the class of grapples, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the annexed drawings; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and durable grapple that can be Operated from the top of a well to grasp a bucket or barrel either upon the inside or outside to raise or lower the bucket or barrel in the well.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grapple with arrow-points or engaging ends to hoist straw or hay, as well as other objects to be hoisted.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of my grapple, showing the arrow ends engaging the inside of a bucket. Fig. 2 is a similar-view showing the arrow ends engaging the outside of a barrel. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the toggle-levers and the operating-pivot.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts throughout the several figures.
`A refers to the S-shaped grapple-arms pivoted together at B. The lower ends of the arms A are formed in the shape of an arrow, (designated by C.) The upper portion of the arms A have an aperture D, in which is secured a chain or rope E for closing the arrow ends C upon an object.
F denotes the toggle-levers, each lever being formed of two parts G and pivoted to the upper part of the arms A at d by the pivotbolt H, which passes through each of the parts G and the arms A. At their free ends and between the said parts G is secured the 0perating'pivot I by means of the pivot-bolt e. This operating-pivot or short arm I has an aperture t', in which is secured a chain or rope L for opening or pulling the arrow ends apart.
M denotes a bucket or pail, (shown in seotion,) and N denotes an ordinary barrel. A series of apertures may be made in the upper portion of the arms A to receive the pivotbolts H, should it be desired to give the arrow ends a greater or less stroke.
Although I have shown only one size of 55 grapple, it will be understood that they may be made of any size to suit the work required to be done.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to any particular form of arrow ends, but reserve to myself the right to change the construction thereof, according to the best results derived.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a grapple, the S-shaped arms, the arrowheads formed in the same piece with the arms and adapted to grasp either the interior or exterior of a vessel, and the chain E, secured to the upper ends of said arms, in combination with the toggle-levers F and G, the short arm I, pivoted to and between the levers F and G, and the chain L, secured to the said short arm, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
REES JONES.
