To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JEFFERSON DAVIS DAW- soN, a citizen oi' the United States, residing at Beardstown, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
My invention has relation to parachutes; and it consists in the novel arrangement and construction of its parts, as hereinafter described.
The object of my invention is to provide a toy parachute contained within a receptacle, said receptacle consisting of two similar parts hinged and being forced apart by the force of the explosion of the firecracker, thus libcrating the parachute.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the parachute inflated. Fig. 2 isa side elevation of the receptacle when closed around the parachute. Fig. 3 is a seetional view of Fig. 2 cut on the line at an.

3 is the spring-catch which holds the sides temporarily in juxtaposition and liberates them by the force-t the explosion.

7 is the canopy of the parachute.
In operation the parachute is folded and placed within the receptacle as in Fig. 3, a firecracker is placed in the compartment 5, and. the catch is fastened. Then the firecracker is lighted and the receptacle thrown into-the air. The cracker exploding releases the catch, the receptacle opens, and the parachute comes out and lills. turns to the sender.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and'desiro to secure by Letters Patent, isp A toy consisting of a recepl acle, said receptacle being composed of hinged members, a parachute attachment connected to the receptacle and adapted to be contained therein, similar-parts attached to the said members opposite their point of hinging, said parts when brought together forming a compartment, an explosive located within said compartment, the members of the receptacle adapted to be forced apart by the ignition of the explosive and liberate the parachute.
