TORPEDO.
No. 291,853. Patented Jan, 8, 1884.

llNiTED STATES ATENT FFlClEO CONRAD PILGRDI, OF EAST XE YORK, N. Y.
TORPEDO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,853, dated January 8, 1884. Application filed November 19, 1853. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CONRAD PILGRHI, of East New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Torpedoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a torpedo in which the fulminate is separated from the gravel and other filling, and is hermetically inclosed in a linen sack and fixed in the center of a waterproof wrapper, so as to be at the bottom part of the completed torpedo, which part is most likely to strike when thrown, and, together with the filling, is inclosed in a water-proofpaper wrapper, the whole being folded over and secured by twisting together and gumming the folded parts. i
The objects of my invention are to guard against so many explosions due to the concussion of the sides of the torpedo, and to provide a water-proof wrapper or case which will prevent the torpedo from being injured by moisture. These obj ects- Iattain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved torpedo; Fig. 2, a plan view of the wrapper; Fig. 3, a plan "iew of the sheet 0011- tainin g the fulminate. Fig. 4 represents ascetional view taken on the line 90 .r of Fig. 2.
The letter A indicates an outer ply of strong waterproof paper or other fabric.
B indicates two inner plies of linen or other suitable fabric, having at the center an opening or aperture for the purpose hereinafter del scribed.
The letter D indicates a piece of linen or other fabric, having the pellet of fulminate attached to it, which is placed on the sheet A,
as shown.
The letter F indicates the sand or gravel, which is placed upon the linen above the fab minate, and the sheets A B.
The letter G indicates an inclosing-piece of water-proof fabric, which is folded around the contents of the torpedo, and twisted and gummed, so as to make an ovoid package with a vertical conical extension, having the center of gravity near the bottom, so that the torpedo will strike with the proper end down when it is thrown, and thus insure its explosion. The part covering the fulminate, how ever, being to a certain extent elastic and much stronger, on account of its chemical treatment, than the wrappers heretofore employed, the torpedo will be much less liable to explode by the shock of another exploded beside it, and in all other parts, except the bottom, such concussion will be absolutely harn1- less.
I am aware that torpedoes, having the fulminate located between wrappers separate from the gravel or sand filling, have been heretofore made, and such I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. 13"
A torpedo having the fulminate located between suitable wrappers separate from the sand or gravel filling, the whole being infolded and hermetically inclosed in a water-proofwrapper, substantially as and for thepurpose specified.
