MAX FAETHE, OF TORRINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
PORTABLE HANGING SHELF.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 676,619, dated June 18, 1901.
v Application filed December 5, 1899- Serial No. 789,237- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAX FAETHE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of T orrington, in the county of Lit'chfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Hanging Shelves, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in portable shelves, and more particularly to the class of separable hanging shelves.
It is the object of my invention to provide a shelf of the above class which can readily be attached to a wall without necessarily puncturing and destroying the plastering in a number of places; further, to provide a shelf which can easily be attached to and detached from a wall, and, finally, one which can conveniently be dismantled for packing and shipment.
It is a further and a desirable feature of my invention to so construct it as to permit of its desired placement upon the wall irrespective of the position of the studdings contained therein, as will again be referred to.
With the above objects in view my invention resides and consists in the novel construction and combination of parts shown upon the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, upon which similar characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several figures, and of which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my Referring to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings, A indicates the shelf proper; B, its brackets, of which there may be any desired number. These brackets in practice are suspended from the under side of the shelf and are designed to rest or hug against the wall C when in use in a manner to support or retain said shelf at a right angle to the wall.
D represents a metal strip which is secured to and extends along the rear edge of the shelf, it being attached in any preferred manner-as, for instance, by means of screws, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Said strip is further provided with an overhanging engaging edge E, forming a groove F thereunder.
G designates ahanger, of which there may be any desired number, according to the length and general size of the shelf. This hanger is of special design and, as will be seen, consists of a hood-like construction having across its rear side a bridge H, with a recess or notch I formed therein. To the lower end of said hanger is formed a depending extension J, having a transverse angular groove K, forming a hook-like support in which the overhanging edge of the metal strip D above referred to is inserted for engagement.
The notch I of the hangerG before mentioned is designed for the purpose of engaging the headed screw L, as clearly appears in Fig. 2. These screws are preferably located in the wall at the point where a stud is situated, so as to insure a rigid engagement for said screws and the parts retained thereby.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that in order to attach one of my shelves to a wall, I
the screws, of which there may be any desired number, would necessarily first need to be inserted the desired distance, after which the hanger G would be laid over the screwheads in a manner to engagethe same, whereupon the metal-stripped edge of the shelf would be threaded through the groove of the hangers, adjusted to the desired position, and thus supported for use. In some instances it might be preferable to attach the shelf to the hangers before the latter are hung to the screws, which can be done with the same desired result.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A portable hanging shelf comprising a series of hangers each having a recess to en .gage the head of a screw and provided with transverse grooves, ash'elf having depending State of Connecticut, this 16th day of August, brackets, a metallic strip secured to said shelf A. D. 1899. and provided with an overhanging edge to engage said grooves and whereby the said shelf MAX FAETHE' 5 is laterally adj ustably supported therein,sub- Witnesses:
stantially as shown and described. GEORGE L. RORABACK,
Signed at Torrington, county of Litclifield, WILLARD A. RORABAOK.
