SCRAPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 676,432, dated June 18, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, THOMAS J. HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arion, in the county of Crawford and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This inventionrelates to an improvement in excavator-Scrapers, and more particularly to that style of scraper drawn by horse-power and provided at its rear portions with handles adapted to tilt the same to permit the material therein to discharge and for holding the same in operative position.

I-Ieretofore with scrapers of the character referred to great inconvenience has been experienced by reason of the handles of the scraper getting beneath certain portions of the draft-rigging, particularly the single or double trees thereof,- whereby it is necessary before the scraper can be' returned to its operative position to release the handles from their caught position.

It is the primary object of the present invention to so construct certain portions of the scraper that the operating-handles when thrown in their forward or discharge positions will be supported in a slightly-inclined elevated position out of reach of the trees or other portions of the draft-rigging to let the scraper at all times be free to swing into its normal position.

WVith such object in view I providea drawbar with upwardly extending supporting members upon which' the handles of the scraper are adapted to rest when thrown forward.

In the accompanying drawings an embodiment of the invention is delineated for the purpose of illustration, and when hereinafter referring to the same like letters of reference wil-l refer to corresponding parts in both views.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan View of the scraper provided with the improvements, and Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof.

Referring more specifically to the drawings,

A designates the scraper proper or shovel, provided with a sharpened forward edge and iianged sides and rear, as ordinarily constructed, and B handles secured in loops or brackets b to the respective sides thereof.

C is a substantially U-shaped draft-bar pivoted at c to the sides of the scraper and provided with an aperture c', to which a single or double tree may be readily attached. At opposite points on the draft-bar, running parallel with the sides of the scraper, are supporting members or arches D, the same being rigidly secured to the draft-bar by projecting portions passing through and clenched or turned over on the bottom of thesame by riveting or by other suitable fastening means. The arrangement of these supporting inembers is such that when the scraper is thrown forward in its tilted position the inner ends of the operating-handles B are rested upon the same and the free ends of the handles are elevated, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2.

While a construction resultant from the invention is shown in the drawings, yet it is not intended that the invention be limited to such special construction, inasmuch as the construction and arrangement of the several parts may be altered without in any manner departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what is new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

In combination, a scraper, a substan tially U shaped draw bar pivoted thereto, and means at the respective ends of the drawbar projecting upwardly from the surface of the same for supporting the outer end of the scraper in an elevated position when the same is tilted, substantially as described.

VIn combination, a scraper, means for drawing the same, a handle on the scraper adapted to tilt the same, and means adapted to suspend the handle in elevated position when the scraper is tilted, comprising a projecting portion on the scraper drawing means IOO upon which aportion of the seraperis adapted to rest, substantially as described.

4. In combination, a scraper,handies thereon, means for drawing the scraper compris- 5 ing separated arms running parallel with and pivotally secured to the sides thereof, and means on said arms upon which the handles are adapted to rest when the scraper is tilted, substantially 'as described. ro 5. In combination, a scraper, an operating-handle therefor, means for drawing the scraper pivotally secured thereto, and an arched supporting member on the drawing means, substantially as described.
