IMPROVEMENT lN COMBINED FORKS, HOOKS, SHOVELS, AND HOES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,219, dated November 24, 1874; application filed July 25, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that-I, GARDNER H. PERKINS, ofCazenovia, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Fork, Hook, Shovel, and Hoe, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a top view of my improved tool arranged as a shovel. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line x as, Fig. 1, and showing in dotted lines the position of the parts when arranged as a The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.

A represents the handle, to the sides of the lower end of which are secured two plates, B, the lower ends of which project to serve as lugs for the eye of the fork O to be pivoted to, and which are recessed upon their upper sides to receive the head of the said fork. The fork G is kept from being forced back when in use by the end of its eye striking against the end of the handle A. The fork O is kept from moving forward when in use by the spring plate or bar D, which is pivoted near its upper end to the handle A, and the lower end of which is held down against a projection, pin, or shoulder, 0 formed upon or attached to the head of the fork O by a band, E, which slides upon the handle A. The handle A is recessed below the upper end of the spring E, to allow its lower end to be raised to release the head of the fork 0.

To change the fork into a hook, the band E is slipped up upon the handle A, the lower end of the spring D is raised, and the fork O is turned forward into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, where it is held in place by the spring D, a hole in which receives a pin, 0 attached to the head of the fork O. F is the shovel-plate, upon the upper edge of which are formed four hooked lugs, f two being bent forward and two backward, and which embrace the head of the fork, and thus keep the said plate in place. The lower part of the side edges of the plate F are cut away upon a line with the inner sides of the side fingers ofthe fork O, and have lugs f formed upon them to enter holes in the lower part of the said side fingers, and thus keep the lower part of the plate F securely in place upon the fork O.

The tool may be adjusted as a fork or hook without removing the plate E, if desired, by springing the side fingers of the fork G 011' the lugs f of the plate F, turning the said plate up upon the handle A, and securing its upper edge with the lip e of the band E.

I purpose procuring separate Letters Pat ent for the scoop-plate, and do not here claim it.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the li'andle'A, provided with the notched lugs B, the fork 0, provided with the pins or stops 0 0 the plate D, and band E, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The plate F, provided with the hooksf and the lugs f in combination with the fork O, handle A, plate D, and band E, substantial- 1y as herein shown and described.
