Description

J. T. STILWELL.
Measuring Faucet. No. 67,605. l Patented Aug. 6, 1867.
, @with tapes atwt @fitta JAMES T. STILWELL, OF DOWAGIAC, MICHIGAN,Y ASSIGNOR T0 HIMSELF AND EVAN I), TOWNSEND.
Letters .Patent lVo. 67,605, dated August 6, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAUGETS.
TO ALL'v WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. STILwsLL, (assigner to myself and EvAN r. Ton/Nexium) of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring-Faucet; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, A represents that portion of a barrel-head through which the instrument about to be described partially passes. B represents a hollow cylinder made of metal, somewhat in the form represented, and inserted to its neck in an opening made in the barrel-head to receive it. This cylinder is open at its inner end, and at a point just beyond where it passes through the head, and within the barrel it is provided with one or`more openings, C C, through which the material from the barrel passes to the chamber within it. The cylinder is also provided with an opening at D, which is made to correspond with the `opening in the exit pipe or cock JL F represents a rodwhich is provided at its lower end with a plunger,A G, and at its upper end with a handle. The rod is passed into the cylinder B, and its plunger is made to fit snugly the chamber of said cylinder.
H represents a metallic case which tits snugly over the cylinder B a portion of its length, and is provided with openings, I I, which correspond with the openings C C of the cylinder, being so arranged that by turning the cylinder B partially around its openings C C are closed bythe metal between the openings I I, and by turning it back again the openings correspond, and the material from the barrel enters the cylinder. Connected to the case H is aniexit pipe or cock, J, which has at its mouth a pivoted cut-off or valve, K.
Prepresents a plate which has a collar formed upon it, which said collar surrounds the caseyH near the point where'said case enters the barrel-head. The collar is secured to the case,'and theplate P is secured to the barrel-head, thus stationing the instrument. n A
M represents a rim-wheel, which-has 'ratchet-teeth upon its periphery, and figures to correspond with these teeth. IA spring-ratchet tooth, S, one ond of which'is attachedito the outer end of cylinder B, catches into the l teeth oftherim-wheel M and causes it to move one tooth every time the cylinder ispartially rotated forward and back again. A suitable pawl is used to prevent the wheel M being moved in but one direction. The wheel M encircles the collar of plateP. O represents a pointer which indicates the movements-of the wheel M. p
E represents a handle secured upon the outer end of cylinder B, and d represents a screw or pin secured to the cylinder, and which passes through aslot in the case H'.v The object of the pin and slot is to prevent the cylinder B from turning only so far and back within the case H. l
In drawing from a barrel with this instrument any material'the-operator pushes the plunger G to the inner end of the cylinder B, and then by means of handle E partially revolves said cylinder until its' openings C are uncovered, and the material fills the chamber of cylinder. As soon as this occurs, thev cylinder is again pari tially rotated until its openings C arc closed by .case H, then-the valve K isrmoved from the mouth of cock J, andthe plunger G is drawn outward forcing` the material through the cock into any vessel placed to receive it. Should the chamber of cylinder B be made to contain one gallon, the pointer will indicate 'one gallon for every 'time the cylinder is operated, (filled and emptied.)v This faucet may be used-for drawing o and measuring any kind of iluids. A pipe or other device may be inserted in thisA faucet for the ingress of air'to allow the free iiow of the liquid.
.Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-y 1. The cylinder B, constructed substantially in the manner described, and used with the plunger G audits rod, and with the case H, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The case H, provided with the cock J. and used with the rim-wheel M 4and its pointer O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In-testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this4 sixth day of March, 1867.
JAMES T. STILWELL. Witnesses:
