TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, H. C. REYNOLDS, of Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough, and State of -New Hampshire, have invented a new and improved Machine for Shaving Axes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure I is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved machine, the plane of section Vbeing indicated by the line a: a', tlg. 2.
Figure 2 is a plan or top view of my machine.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a machine in which the blade of an axe which is to be shaved is placed upon a reciprocating block, the lower surface'of which is concave, and which rests upon a convex stationary bed, the form of which is such that as the aforesaid block moves to and fro it will give such a motion to the axe that the knife for shaving can he held almost stationary, the curve described by the axe under theknifc being like that which it is intended to impart to the surface of the axe.
A represents a bed, made of wood, metal, or other suitable material. B is a horizontal shaft, having its bearings in uprights C, which project from the bed A. A pitman, D, connects a crank, E, on the shaft B with a block or sliding-bed, F, on the upper surface of which clampsGr Gr are provided for holding the axe which is to be shaved. The block F rests on a convex portion'of the bed A, and has its bottom concave, made to correspond to the shape of the bed, so as to well fit thereon, and to allow a reciprocating motion to the said block. As the shaft B is revolved by any suitable mechanism, a horizontal reciprocating motionis imparted to the block F, and the axe on the same is carried to and fro under the cutters H H, which are secured to a handle, I. The handle I is held in such a manner between two horizontal bars K K, `which are stationary, arranged between uprights which are firmly secured to the bed A, that the same canrock somewhat on the lower bar K. On account of the convex surface of the bed A, the axe will move in an arch under the cutters, which will be almost like that of the surface of the axe when finished, so that only av slight rocking motion of the knife is required to adjust the position of the same to the required shape of the axe.
I am aware that machines for shaving axes have been already in use; but they all have straight slides, that is, the axe'moved in a straight line, and the knife had consequently to be lowered so as to reach the differ# Aent portions of the axe, thereby frequently causing ripples In my machine the knife is kept pretty near on a level'at all times while cutting.
What I lclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved machine for shaving axesconstructed as described, consisting of the convex bed A, concave reciprocating slide F, cutters H upon the handle I, placed between the bars K K, all operating substantially as herein shown and described.
H. C. REYNOLDS.
