MACHINE FOR CREASING AND BEVELING BARRELS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,211, dated July 4, 1854.-.
To all fui/wm z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD H. CnozrER, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Machine for Beveling and Creasing Barrels; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operationof the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which Figure 1, is a front elevation of my improved machine. Fig. 2, is a detached view of a cam, which operates theplatform on which the barrel is placed. Fig. `3, is a plan or top view of the cutters and mechanism by which they are operated. Fig. 4, is a detached perspective view of the cutters.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a new and iInproved machine for beveling the ends of barrels, and cutting the creases therein to receive the heads, and consists in the employment or use of .a `movable platform, and movable cutters arranged and operating as will be fully shown hereafter.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed G, havinglits bearings on to describe its construction and operation.
A, Fig. 1, represents a frame constructed in any proper manner, to support the several working parts of the machine.
B, is a platform at the lower end of the frame, A. This platform works, or is fitted between guides, (a), (a), attached to the inner sides of uprights, (b), (b), of the frame.
C, C, are rods attached, one to each end of the platform, and extending upward through the cross piece, (c), of the frame, and attached to the ends of a bar, Dwhich bar rests upon an elliptic spring, E, on the upper surface of the cross piece,
F, is a cam which bears against the bar, D, said barbeing hung at the end of a shaft, the upper parts of the uprights, (615), (CZ), which are attached to the cross piece, (c). At the end of the shaft, G, opposite to the end in which the cam, F, is hung, there is a worm wheel, H, into which a screw, I, gears, said` screw being at the upper end of an upright shaft, J. At the lower end of the shaft, J, there is a bevel` pinion, (e), which gears into a bevel pinion, (f), on a horizontal shaft, K.
On the outer end of the shaft, K, there is a crank, L, and on the opposite end there is abevel pinion, (g), which gears into a bevel pinion, (It), on an upright shaft, M.
The shaft M, has attached to its lower` M, passes.
The stock (j), hast-wo cutters (Z), (m), attached to it, shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. The cutter (Z), is upright, and somewhat inclined or bent at its upper end, as shown in Figs l andl 4f. The cutter (m), is horizontal, and `of gouge form.
Q, is a circular horizontal band or rim, attached to hangers R, B, which are secured to across piece (n), of the frame, see Fig. l. The band or rim Q, encompasses the plate N, see Figs. l and 3.
Operation. The barrel to be operated upon is placed upon the platform B, see
Fig. 1, the barrel being represented by S,'
and motion is communicated to the shaft K, by turning the crank L, or in any other manner. As the shaft K, rot-ates, a rotary motion is communicated to the shaft M, and plate `N,Yby means of the bevel wheels (g), (It), and the cam F, is also made to rotate by means of the shaft J, which communicates motion to the shaft Gr, from the shaft K. As the shaft M, rotates, the cutters (Z), (m), have a horizontal reciprocating motion given them by means of the stationary screw P, which causes the worm wheel O, to rotate, and a vertical reciprocating motion is given the platform B, by means of the cam F, and spring E.
