Letters Patent No. 105,
145, dated July l5, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE FOR FLUTING- MQLDIGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
#44 To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, RICHARD VAN RIPnu,\of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Fluting Ogee Moldings; andI do hereby declare that the. following is a full description of the saine.
The nature of my invention consists in combining the noting-knife with a rocker frame, secured by center pins to adjusting levers, so that, by a continuous 0peration, the knife can be made to follow the curved outline of the ogee, and thus complete the iliiting operation without removing the molding to `another machine, as has been previously practiced to finte ogee moldings.
But, to describe my invention more particularly, I will refer to the accompanying drawing forming apart ot' this specification, the same letters of reference wherever they occu'r referring to like parts. i
Figure l is a side view ot the apparatus, showing the position of the Hating-knife at the commencement of the ogec, and, by the arrows, the motion of the knife to make the first halt' of the cut.
Figure 2 is a side view, showing the position of thc knife at the end of the ogee, as carried down or back the last half of the out bythe rocker-frame.
Figure 3 is a front view of the apparatus. 4
Letter A represents the bed of the apparatus, made of any suitable material and'sizc for the purposes required. lo the upper side of the bed are secured two cheek-pieces, to the back end of the cheek-pieces are secured, b y a center-pin, C, two adjusting levers, D, having their outer 0r front ends bent or lcurved down and outward, as shown at d2, so as to be below the level of the bed-board, and thus reacht under the molding, and in contact with its under side.
.For the purpose of adapting the ends of the adjusting levers to various sized moldings operated upon by the machine, slots E are cut in the cheek-pieces, and, by means of binding-screws, F, the arms or levers may be adjusted to fit moldings of any size.
lo the outer ends ofthe adjusting leversis secured, by a center-pin, G, a rocker-frame, H, somewhat of the shape of a figure 5. In the upper part of this rocker-frame, that is between the vertical sides of it, is secured upon acenter-pin, J, the iluting-knife stock, K, in which operates the fluting-knife, L.
For the purpose of adjusting the set of the datingknife to the size of the molding and outline of the' ogee, the cutter-stock center-pin J works in a slot in iu iig. 1. The operator thenrby means of the handle R, moving in the direction of the arrow, carries the point of the cutter along the first half of the outline of the ogee, or until the knife is parallel with the vertical sides of the rocker-frame. When it` has arrived R, to keep the knifeedge in contact with the ogec, moves the rocker-frame back, as shown in iig. 2.
By this operation the lower half of the ogee is flut-` ed,' and thus, by a single continuous operation, the curved line ofthe ogee is quickly and perfectly tinted.
Having now described my invention, I will proceed ters Patent of the United States.
I claim- The combination of the levers D, made as described, with the rocker-frame H and adjustable cutter-stock K, all arranged and operating as hereinbefore set fort-h.
RICHARD VAN RPER.
XVitnesses:
J As. HENDERSON, FRANKLIN BARRITT.
the rocker-frame, and, by means of au adj Listing-plate,
held in its place, Vand the fluting-cutter set, as shown at this position, the operator still holding the hand-le l to set forth what I claim and desire to secure by Let
