'ro ALL WHoM 1T MAY eoNo'ERN:
` Be it known that I, JOHN S. LOOMIS, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Machine for Sand-Papering and Polishing Wooden orv other Mouldings; and I hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and eiract description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are lettered to correspond with and form apart of the specification.
To enable the publie to understand the nature oi' my invention, and those who are skilled in the useful mechanic arts to construct and operate the same, I will describe it as follows, to wit:
Figure lis a perspective drawing of my apparatus for sand-papering or polishing wooden or other mouldings.
A is a horizontal movable bed, which is operated backwards and forwards by a crank .upon the shaft S, or otherwise. i
B is a spring-block, the under side of which is fashioned to receive and correspond with themoulding M, and is provided with a sand-paper surface, next the moulding, or may be used without the paper by simply employing a feeder or sand-cup, D', which distributes `the sand, throgh the pipe T, upon the moulding to be rubbed with block B, which is operated by the reciprocating bed A by means of the arm u.
C is the revolving polishingb'rush chamber, and is provided with an emery or sand-bor, D, which supplies the brushes W W with polishing-material in a small uniform quantity, distributed through the funnel-shaped tube by the jar of the machine. These revolving brushes, W W, are kept up at a. high speed by the rapid revolutions ofthe transverse shaft o. The brush N is moved horizontally upon the moulding M bythe reciprocating bed A, and the mouldings M are fed through the machine upon the adjustable bed G, by the fiexible wheels E E', which are also adjusted by any wellknown device to suit the different thickness of mouldings, and the block B and stationary block may be changed to correspond with the different-shaped mouldings upon the bed Gr, which may be arranged upon springs to produce an upward pressure of the moulding M, in lieu of having the block B hung upon and operated by a spring, as shown in the accompanying drawings.
' The above-described machne may b e operated by thc band-wheels l 2 3 4 5, or by nny'other wel1-known mechanical means.
By the above arrangement I am enabled to perform the work of ten menper day, in a. more workmanlilre manner, by the employment of -two small boys, one to feed the machine, and the other to remove the finished mouldings. Therefore, i
What I`claimV as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The sand-hlock or rubber B, cup D', pipe T, revolving brushes W W, dusting-brush N, stationary rubber F,
emery-cup D, and adjustable bed G, all combined and operating in the manner and for the-purpose substantially as described. Y I
In testimony whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. LOOMIS.
