PAVING- BLOCK.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,672, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed January 21, 1901. serial No. 44,026. \No model.)
To ctZZ whmn it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, REUBEN D. CULVER, of the city of Veedersburg, Fountain county, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paving-Blocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to paving-blocks; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved paving-block having suitable passages formed in its vertical faces to permit the passage of the sand, cement, or other material which may be used as a filler in order to form a more perfect joint.
' Figure 1 is a perspective view showing two paving-blocks constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations showing different sides of the paving-block. Fig. 4 is an end view of two adjacent paving-blocks.
In constructing a paving-block in accordance with my invention I form the body 1 substantially rectangular in shape, and in one of the vertical faces are formed two parallel grooves 2, which divide the face of the block into three divisions of substantially equal area. The central division 3, as shown in Fig. 4, projects farther from the body of the block than do the side divisions t, so that when two paving-blocks are laid adjacent to each other their central divisions 8 bear against each other, while the divisions 4 are at a slight remove from each other. The horizontal grooves 2 are connected by vertical grooves 5, formed at suitable intervals across the projecting division 3, thereby permitting the passage of the sand or other material that may be used from the upper side to the lower side of the block. A horizontal groove 6 is formed in the upper division at, and a corresponding groove 7 is formed in the lower division. The opposite side of the block is preferably formed with three divisions, of which the side divisions are identical with the divisions 4 and are provided with the horizontal grooves 8, corresponding to the grooves 6 7.
Instead of the projecting portion 3 I provide a number of projections or elevations 9,
rigid with the face of the block and extending therefrom a distance equal to that of the projection 3. These projections are at a slight remove from the side divisions of the face of the block and leave passage-ways 10, corresponding to the grooves 2 formed in the opposite face of the block. These projections are also separated a slight distance from each other, permitting the filler to pass'between them to reach the lower side of the block. In the form shown in the drawings I have used letters for the elevations described; but it is manifest that any other form may be used without departing from the scope of my invention, and I do not desire to be limited to any exact construction. In either case the projections will perform the same function as the projecting division 3, while at the same time the material may readily pass to the lower side of the block to fill in the spaces wherever needed.
In Fig. t I have shown two paving-blocks arranged adjacent to each other, with the elevations 9 on one block bearing against the projecting division 3 on the other block and holding the side divisions out of contact with each other, leaving a space 11 at each side between the two blocks. The grooves 8 are in alinement with the grooves 6 and 7, and v the passages 10 are in alinement with the grooves 2, forming continuous passage-ways from one endto the other of the blocks. The sand or other material which may be used is poured between the paving-blocks into the spaces 11, from which it passes into the passage-ways formed by the grooves -2 and the passages 10, and thence to the lower side of the block to fill in wherever it is needed.
I claim l. A paving-block having two horizontal grooves formed in one of its vertical faces and dividing the face of the block into three divisions, of which the central division projects farther. from the body of the block than the side divisions, and vertical grooves extending across the central division and joining the horizontal grooves, substantially as specified.
2. A paving-block having one of its vertical faces divided into three divisions, and a series of elevations in the central division which extend farther from the body of the block than do the side divisions, substantially as sion and joining the horizontal grooves 2, and I0 specified. grooves 6, 7 formed in the said side divisions,
3. A paving-block having the horizontal substantially as specified. grooves 2 formed in one of its vertical faces, In testimony whereof I afifix my signature 5 thereby forming a central division 3, and the in presence of two witnesses.
