SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,539, dated September 6, 1904.
Application filed January 23, 1904.
To a. who/n it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERAD GnRAnRD'rs, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Building-Block, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to masonry; and its object is to provide a new and improved building-block for forming partition-walls and the like, arranged to permit easy and quick setting of the blocks and a firm uniting of adjacent blocks to produce an exceedingly strong, durable, and light wall.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement in the form of a partition-wall. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of one of the blocks or tiles. Fig. 4: is a cross-section showing adjacent blocks previous to setting one on the other; and Fig. 5 is a like view of the same, showing the blocks set in position.
The blocks or tiles A, of a suitable material, are set on edge and break joint, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 1, and each block or tile is provided on each edge with a groove B, extending from one end of the edge to the other, and in the bottom of each groove B are formed spaced recesses B, as plainlyindicated in Figs. 2 and The end recesses B of the grooves are formed such a distance from the ends thereof that they intersect with the recesses of the adjacent grooves, so that large spaces for cement are formed at the corners of the block, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The grooves B and the recesses B are arranged uniformly in $erialNo. 190,395. (No modelfi the several blocks, so that when the blocks are set one on top of the other and break joints then the grooves B and the recesses B in the edges of adjacent blocks are in register with each other, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2.
In setting the blocks or tiles,mortar, cement, or other suitable plastic binding substance 0 is employed and placed in position on the top edge of the uppermost tile or block, so as to not only till the groove B and recesses B of this upper edge, but to extend a distance above the same, as plainly indicated in Fig. I, so that when the adjacent block or tile is set onto the one containing the binding substance then the latter is forced into the groove B and the recesses B of the tile to be set and the surplus binding substance can readily pass out at the ends of the groove to allow a proper setting of the tile, at the same time causing the plastic substance to enter both registering grooves and the registeringrecesses B, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. It is understood that the same operation is repeated at the ends of each block or tile.
A wall constructed in the manner described is rendered exceedingly strong, durable, and sufficiently light for partition-walls requiring no lateral support.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A building block or tile having each of its edges formed with a longitudinal groove extending from end to end of the edge, and spaced recesses in the bottoms of the grooves, the recesses at the ends of one groove intersecting the recesses at the ends of adjacent grooves to form large spaces for cement at the corners of the block, as set forth.
