SAUL V. SHTREK, CARL SHIREK, AND FREDERIC LEROND, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
MANIFOLD CONTINUOUS CASH-CHECK DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,566, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed November 17,1900. Serial No. 36,839. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, SAUL W. SHIREK and CARL SHIREK,citizens of Germany-,and FRED-. ERIC LEROND, a citizen of the United States, all residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Manifold Continuous Cash- Gheck Devices; and We hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in autographic cash-register devices where multiple copies of checks are to be made.
It has for its object the furnishing of a simple, cheap, and compact apparatus wherein the carbon-sheets remain stationary, the paper in multiple layers is drawn between the carbons, the original check or tag and copies torn off at one and the same time, and the succeeding checks left in position ready for use without further manipulation.
7 It consists of the parts and the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view of our device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a modification.
Having reference to the drawings, A represents a case, of pasteboard, wood, metal, or any other suitable material. B represents the paper, consisting of a plurality of superposed sheets piled in tablet form and arranged in zigzag folds. The sheets may be perforated, as at 2, whereby the checks are more readily torn off. We provide a double cover for this case constructed as follows: C represents the cover proper, having a transverse slot 3 near one end and through which are brought the sheets B. The cover 0 is simply placed over the vertical walls of the case, and its deep surrounding flange telescopes with the corresponding flange of the case, thereby enabling the cover. to be readily and entirely removed from the case when introducing the sales-slips and also permitting the cover to adjust itself with relation to the decreasing thickness of the tablet or pad as the latter is used up. Carbon-sheets t are laid transversely of the paper, their edges allowed to project over the sides of the case.
The secondary cover or clamp c fits over the cover 0, and its sides 5 press tightly against the case and hold the ends of the carbonsheets firmly and keep these sheets taut. This cover or lid 0 has its center portion cut out, as 6, so that the paper is exposed. The cover 0 offers a support upon which to Write. The portion of the clamp-cover 0 left about the opening 6 forms a sufficient holder and guide for the sheets B. In this tablet form of the device it is not necesssary to have the lower end of the lid 0 extend to the end of the case, as the paper is properly held otherwise and a better opportunity for grasping the ends of the paper and tearing off the checks is afforded.
The device can be made in very economical form and to take the place of the ordinary cash-check books so much in vogue. To this end it may be made of pasteboard containing, say, one hundred checks, the parts pasted permanently together and to be thrown away when emptied.
We do not wish to limit ourselves to the use of the paper in pad form alone. The same principle of manifolding, copying, and tearing off the checks simultaneously is applicable to check devices of different forms, as shown in Fig. 3. Here A represents a case, of wood, metal, or any suitable material. B is a roll consisting of a plurality of superposed sheets of paper mounted on an axle, as 7. The paper passes around tension-guides, as 8. A cover 0, having a slot 3, fits removably upon the case. The sheets of the roll B are brought up through this slot,as before, and allowed to project beyond the end of the case. Carbon-strips 4 are interposed transversely between the sheets of paper. The outside or clamp cover 0 fits snugly against the sides of the case and holds the carbon-strips and the paper in position. This cover or lid has a central opening 6'. The rear end of this lid projects beyond the edge of the case and is provided with a cutter 9. The sides 5 of the lid clasp the sides of the case so firmly as to prevent any displacement of the parts, and at the same time access can be easily had to the inside of the case, as when it is necessary to replace the roll or renew the carbons. The
projection of the end of the lid 0' beyond the edge of the case permits the ends of the paper being easily grasped from beneath, drawn through the machine, and torn off. In this form of the device it is to be noted that there is an entire absence of cogs and cranks.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cash-check device, a case, a detachable cover having a surrounding flange telescopically fitting upon this case and having a transverse slot near one end, a secondary cover telescopically fitting snugly the sides of the case, a central opening in this secondary cover, and the rear end of the latter terminating short of the corresponding end of the first-named cover whereby it is adapted to permit paperdrawn between the two covers, to be readily torn 01$.
2. A cash-check device consisting of a case, a plurality of superposed continuous sheets of paper contained therein, a detachable cover fitting this case, a transverse slot in this cover through which the paper runs, carbon-sheets interposed between the sheets of paper, a detachable lid having a central opening, and having its lower end terminating short of the corresponding end of the first-named cover whereby the several checks or sheets of paper drawn between the carbon-sheets, may be torn off simultaneously.
A cash-check device consisting of a pinrality of sheets of paper folded in zigzag form in a tablet contained within a case, a detachable cover to this case, a transverse slotin the cover through which the paper passes, carbon-sheets interposed between the sheets of paper, a secondary detachable cover having a central opening fitting over the edges of the paper, one of said covers telescoping with the case and the other telescoping with the first-named cover said second-named cover holding the carbon-sheets fixedly in position. 4. In a cash-check device, acase, closed at the sides and ends and open at the top, a detachable cover the outer sides of which and the sides of the case are fitted one within the other, said cover havinga transverse slot near one end, and a secondary cover detachably fitting the device and provided with a central opening. I
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
