MANIFOLDING SALESMBOIK.
SPECIFECATZN forming *part f Letters Patent No, 668,117, dated February 12, 1901.
Application filed November 14, 1899. `Serial No. 736,916. kNo modeli) To all whom, t litany concern:
Se it known that l, HENRY H. NORRINGTON, residing in Nest Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Manifolding Sales-Book, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of sales-pads or manifold-books in which a carbon-sheet is used for duplicating a memorandum or sale, and which has for its purpose to provide a book or pad of this character of a very simple and economical construction that can be easily handled and Which will effectively serve for its intended purposes.
This invention consists in certain details and novel features of construction, as Will hereinafter be fully described, and pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying dra\vings,in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of a sales pad or book embodying my invention, the same being shown as a triplicator, the book being' opened ont. Fig. 2 is a detail crosssection of the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the form of book shown in Fig. l, the book being closed. Fig. e is a perspective View of a modified construction of my invention, the book or pad in such form being in the nature of a duplicator. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
My present form of sales book or pad comprises a cover having upper and lower foldable members joined bya flexible hinge l.
Fixedly attached to the bottom section lX of the cover is a pad of retained memorandumleaves having a length equal that of the cover and made fast to the cover-section lX by the staples 3, that pass through the head-block ends 2C of the leaves, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The retained leaves (designated by 2 in the drawings) are in the nature of continuous leaves extending the full length of the cover-section lx, and the said leaves have no tearing-perforations, as they remain attached to the cover. Each retained memorandum-leaf has a lateral or wing portion that forms an entry or original leaf 2, and the said wing portion of each of the leaves 2 is of a length less than the retained leaf portion 2, so that when the original or entry leaf 2a is folded over upon the retained leaf 2 the upper edge of the entry-leaf 2a will extend to the head-block portion 2C of the leaf 2 only, and not over it, such correlation of the two parts-that is, the retained and entry leaf-sections-being provided to produce a clear distinction between the two members 2 2 when the member 2a is folded upon the retained leaf-section 2, whereby to facilitate the proper grasping of the leaf 2a and tearing olf, and, furthermore, the shortening of the wing or entry leaf-section 2a is to permit the convenient turning back of such of the memoraudum-leaves 2a as have been used and to properly bring into View the uppermost blank one of the leaves 2 upon which it is intended to fold the carbon-sheet and the entry-leaf.
In the preferred construction of my invention, as shown in Fig. l, the saine is arranged as a triplicator, and in this form the line on which the entry or original leaf 2 folds has a series of tearing-perforations 2y and a slot 2x, through Which the extension et of the carbon -sheet passes, said extension 4X passing down in all of the slots 2x in all of the sheets 2 and ismade fast to the under side of the lowermost original or entry leaf 2u. The carbon-sheet 4lhas its body portion of a length and Width equal that of the original or entry leaf 2a. lt also has an extension 4, of a Width practically that of the slot 2x. The said extension in the complete construction of my improved sales-book passes down through the slot 2x and has its end lapped over the outermost one of the entry-sheets, as indicated at 4b, (see Fig. 3,) to which it is made fast in any suitable manner. To the upper coversection is held a supplemental set of memorandum or triplicating leaves 5. 'lhese leaves 5 are preferably of tissue or other proper paper, such as will take up the imprint upon the under side from a carbon-sheet. The leaves 5 are of the saine size as the entryleaves 2f, and the said leaves 5 have a headblock portion 5c running lengthwise of the upper cover-section and disposed adjacent the inner edge thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. l, and upon the head-block line the said leaves 5 have tearing perfor-ations or slots 5.
So far as described the manner in which the triplicator-book shown inl Figs. l, 2, and
IOO
upper blank -of the leaves 2 in view. Thev carbon-sheet 4 is then folded over the leaf 2,
after which the triplicate sheet 5 is laid over the carbon-sheet, and then the original or entry leaf 2a is placed upon the leaf 5. The
user after making the entry on the leaf 2a:
tears out the said leaf 2a, as alsothe triplicate leaf 5, the leaf 2 being retained in the book.I
By reason of making the carbon-sheet 4 in .the manner shown and described, the said sheet can at all times be made to lie over the retained leaves 2 and so held-that when the book is closed the danger of its being mutilated or torn out will be reduced tothe minimum. I
In Figs. 4 and 5 is-illustrateda modified form of my invention, the same being arranged as a duplicator. In this form of my invention the ret-ained leaf 2 has its wing or entry leaf-section 2a made of a length sufficient to extend up to the head-block portion of th e'said leaves 2. In this case, however, the leaves 2 have tearing-perforatious 2h in line withthe carbon-sheet slot 2i. (See Fig. 5.) In this latter form of my invention the user turns down the entry-leaf upon the carbon-sheet, which transfers the entry to the under leaf 2. The carbon-sheet is then turned'back and both leaves 2 2a torn out, iffdesired, it being understood that tearing-perforations'2y are provided for separating the -two leaves 2 2a from each other.
Having thus describedrny invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isn 1. A sales-book,comprisinga pad of leaves, each leaf being held to fold in the'center, one
end of each leaf being extended to form av head-block or binding-margin, eachleaf having a slit midway thereof, Vand perforations on both sides of and in line with the slit, and a carbon-sheet having one end inserted thro ugh tion, a set of leaves havinga head-block portion at one end made fast to the lower-cover section, said leaves having lateral extensions forming entry leaf members 2a, and having tearing-perforations, and a slot on the folding-line of the members 2a, said members 2ad being of lessv length'than the members 2; the
double-faced carbon-sheet, said sheet having an extension passed through the slots in the leaves 2a, and made fast to the under side of the leaves, and aset of triplicate leaves fixedly connected tothe upper cover-section to fold over onto the retained leaves, and the carbonsheet, all being arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
3. The hereinbefore-described improved sales book or pad comprising a two-part cover having avflexible hinged connection, a pad of leaves having a head-block made fastto the lower cover-section, said leaves having each a lateral extension forming an entry-leaf 2a, adapted to fold over onto the retained leaf portion 2, said leaves 2a having a slot 2X, and having tearing-perforations on the foldingline, said entry leaf-sections 2, being of a length to extend to the head-block portion of the retained leaves 2a only, the double-faced carbon 4 having an extension 4a passingdown through the slot 2X, and made fast to the under side of theentry-leaves 2, the triplicating-leaves 5, said leaves being of a length equal that of the entry-leaves 2a and having ahead block portion extending lengthwise thereof adjacent the inner edge of the upper cover-section to which the said head-block portion is secured, the said leaves being also provided with tearing-` perforations on the head-block line as specified. 4
