To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, ULYSSES GRANT CAVE, a citizen of the United States, resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Autographic Registers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of re erence marked'thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.

The invention has relation to autographic registers for use in registering or recording memorandums and sales in mercantile and other transactions, having for'an object to insure a positive feed of the paper without back slip and to pin the paper slips or sheets upon which the items are registered together by the paper material thereof. The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustratin the invention, the numeral 1, designates a ame or casing having a platform plate perspective view of a' 2, and two rotary spindles 3 and 4, designed respectively to receive the paper supply or feed roll 5. of paper, and for winding of the paper to constitute the record roll 6, the paper passing from the supply roll outwardly, longitudinally over the platform plate, the upper sheet or sheets of paper 7 7, passing then over a roller 8, located usually at the rear end of the platform plate and carrying an annular series of pointed teeth or projections 9, for engagment with the said outer sheet or sheets, to insure a positive feed thereof without back slip, and thence out of the casing through a transverse slot 9, thereof. The lower sheet or sheets of paper 10, preferably also pass over this roller, in engagement with the points thereof, and thence inwardly to the record spindle, to which they are made fast for winding.
It is preferred that a cover 11, shall be provided for the platform plate, said cover having an opening 12, to expose the paper passing over the platform plate, and in order to facilitate the manipulation of the paper over and around. the pointed roller and throu h the transverse slot 9, the cover plate 11 and the end plate 18. of the casing, are usually both movable with relation to the casing and to each other. The cover plate is made entirely detachable, and has connection with the casing usually by means of a lateral flange 14:, having a lower hook and 14., engaging in a seat 14 of the casing, a binding screw 15, of the casing having its stemengaging an openbottom notch seat-15 of said end. and its head in clamping engagement with the side of the hook end, said plate having at its opposite side a pivotal latch 16, located ander the platform plate and engaging the end of a rod 21, hereinafter referred. to, to hold the cover plate down at thatside.
The end plate is usually pivoted to the casing'at 17, so that it may be turned to one side, out of the way, when the paper is being adjusted. The transverse slot 9, of the casing, through which the upper sheets of paper pass out of the casing, is located between the upper edge of the end plate and the rear end of the cover plate, and the lower paper sheets, having been adjusted around the pointed roller and made fast to the'record spindle, and the end plate being turned back to normal position, the upper paper sheets are engaged with the points of the pointed roller, (the end plate being held in normal position usually by headed studs 18, under which the edge of the plate engages) the upper paper sheets are then passed over the top edge of the end plate (said top edge being provided with a bent flange 19 to provide a broader bearing surface for the paper sheets), after which the cover plate is readjusted to position. A spring pressure device 20, usually carried by the cover plate and cobperating with the points of the feed roller, is employed to press the Outer paper sheets in. engagement with the points of the roller.
The platform plate is usually slidably engaged With transverse rods 21, of the casing, said rods and the record and supply spindles being carried by a stationary side 22, of the casing, so that when the other removable side 23, of the casing, is detached, the paper rolls may be inserted inplace or removed as may be required and the platform plate may be slid out and in.
When the side of the casing is removed, the cover plate removed, and the end plate turned to one side, the interior of the casing is effectually opened for manipulation and adjustment of the paper and rolls.
The points'of the roller, as stated, will cause the upper sheets of paper to feed positively, without back slip, when the record roll spindle is rotated by suitable-means, usually a crank22' thereu on, to feed the upper paper sheets and win the lower paper sheets upon the record roll. And these points will also pin the upper sheets of paper together, so that when the" slip is torn oif atthe straight edge 23", both the upper and lower slips will'be perforated longitudinally, as at 24, the walls or edges of the perforations of the lower slip being slightly ofi'setinto engagement with the erforations of the upperslip, the two slips eing thereby secured or pinned together by the paper of the slips. j

And inasmuch as the upper and lower paper sheets are first flattened out in their passage over and from the platform late to the pointedroller, and issued injfiat em from thepointed roller of the machine, the paper slips torn off at the straight edge and so pinned together are,by the paper-sleek or pinning, held in fiat form and prevented from curling or bending, being" thereby more easily andled.
Carbon paper is used between the paper sheets, the carbon roll being usuallywound' suitably upon a spindle or rod 25, and en"- gaged with spring devices 26, secured withm a seat 28, of the casing. The carbon paper passes transversely over the platform plate between the paper sheets, and at the o poslte s1de.thereof,-is suitably fixed in position, preferably by passing the ends of the carbon paper under a lateral flange 29, of the cover plate and turning up a pivoted channeled clasp 30, in engagement with the carbon ends and with the said lateral flange.
lVhen new carbon is required the pivoted clasp is turned down, the carbon ends grasped and pulled'to unwind fresh carbon, the ends of the fresh carbon secured in the manner stated and the worn part torn off at the upper straight edge of the clasp.
The paper supply spindle has suitable gripping means for the interior walls of the tubular spool 31, carrying the supply paper roll, usually radial spring arms 32, of said spindle.

In an autographic register, a casing having a platform plate, a paper supply spindle, a roller located near one end of saidplate and provided with an annular series of slender pointed teeth capable of pinning paper sheets together by the paper material thereof, said casing being provided at one side with a seat, a carbon roll holder in said seat, and a platform cover plate removable to expose said roller at the top and carrying a pressure device located and operating within the lines of said teeth, said plate having at one side a downturned flange, and a pivotal clamp member for the end of the carbon sheet.
6. In an autographic register, a casing having a platform plate, a paper supply spindle, a roller located near one end of said plate and provided with an annular series of slender pointed teeth capable of pinnin paper sheets together by the paper materia thereof, a removable cover for the platform plate carrying a pressure device located and casing having a seat at one side, and said cover having at one side a hook projection engaging said seat, and a clamp screwengaging t e casing and said hook projection, said cover having at the other side a pivoted latch device.
7. In an autographic register, a casing having a platform plate, a paper supply spindle, a record spindle, a roller located near one end of the platform plate and provided with a series of long slender ointed teeth, a removable cover for the p atform plate having at one side a hook projection for engagement with a clamp screw and at the other side a pivoted latch and a carbon sheet clamp device, and means carried by and removable with said cover, cooperating With said roller and located and operating Within the lines of said teeth for perforation of the paper sheets and to prevent backslip thereof, and a pivoted end plate for said casing adjacent to said roller.
