UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS STICKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO CHARLES A. DRUCKLIEB, OF SAME PLACE.
STEAM-INJ'ECTOR.
SPECIFICATION formngp'art of Letters Patent No. 674,181, dated May 14, 1901.
Application filed May 4:, 1900. Serial No. 15,517. (Model.)
1b all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANCIS STICKER, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Injectors and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the iuvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to steam-injectors, and has special reference to double-tube machines of the kind designed for locomotive use.
One object is to provide improved means for regulating the capacity of the injector and its ability to work under different pressures and temperatures and also to accomplish this regulation while the injector is in operation without destroying its proper working.
A further object is to provide improved means for packing the stem of the startingvalve, allowing easy examination and removal of the packing, and a further object is to locate the thread of the valve-stem outside of the injector-casing, so as to prevent its being worn by the action of the steam.
The invention will -be hereinafter fully set l forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is avertical longitudinal sectional view of an injector constructed in accordance with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the casing; a, the steam-inlet; a', the waterinlet; a2, the overflow-opening, and as the boiler-outlet.
B is the forcer, and C is the lifter. The steam-inlet tube 1 and the combining and delivery tube 2 of the lifter are located in relation to the corresponding tubes of the forcer after the manner shown and described in Letters Patent No. 600,455, issued to me on March 8, 1898. The steam is supplied to tube 1 through a conduit 3 leading from steamchamber 4.
of the machine, combining-tube 2 is adjustable longitudinally, so as to increase or diminish the space between its receiving end and the discharge end of steam-tube 1. This longitudinal adjustment is effected by means of a cock 5, having grooves which accommodate lugs 6 of the combining and delivery tube. This cock is of conical outline andV is held to its seat by a plug 7, screwed into an internally-threaded opening in the end of the casing, the stem 8 projecting beyond the plug., The combining-tube is externally threaded at 9 to engage a threaded opening in one of the partitions of the casing. Hence by turning the cock the combining tube will be moved longitudinally, so as to increase or decrease the space between it and the steamtube, and thus regulate the capacity of the machine. It will be noted ihat this adjustment of the combining-tube is effected with-V out the employment of stuffing-boxes. v tapered cock is held firmly to its seat and at the same time the rotation thereof effects the longitudinal movement of the combining and delivery tube.
The discharge-chamber 10 of the lifter opens into Water-chamber 11 of the forcer. mediate the steam-tube 12 and the combining-tube 13 of the forcer is a water or lifting tube 14, through which the water discharged by the lifter passes to the combining-tube. The combining-tube 13 is provided with longitudinal lateral escape-passages 15, as set forth in Letters Patent No. 645,27 5, granted to me March 13, 1900.
D is the steam-controlling valve, having its seat against partition 16 for controlling the passage of steam through conduit 3 to the lifter. From the face of this valve projects a plug 17, which extends into the steam-tube 12 of the forcer, preventinga supply of steam entering the latter when the valve is first unseated to supply steam to the lifter. After the water is lifted and discharged into chamber 10 and taken up by tube 14 valve D is fully withdrawn, allowing the steam to enter the forcer and be condensed by the water. The stem 18 of valve D is projected through a stuing-box 19, fitted in an opening in the casing. This stuffing-box is externally threaded to engage a ring 20, which latter is screwed into an internally-threaded opening in the The y Inter-v IOO casing. A packing-holding ring 21 is held in place by a nut 22 engaging an external thread on stuffing-box 19. Beyond the studing-box stem 18 is externally threaded to engage an internally-threaded sleeve 23, which is held station ary by arms 24, projecting from the ring 20. An operating-handle 25 is on the outer end of the valve-stem. By this construction not only may the valve and stuffingbox be readily removed, but the thread of the valve-stem is outside of the casing, and thus protected from the action of steam.
It will be observed that the discharge of the lifter is through spill-chamber 26, the use of an intermediate auxiliary overflow not being required by reason of the employment of the lateral longitudinal escape-passages 15. The auxiliary overflow from chamber 26 and the primary overflow of the chamber 27 may both be positively cut off by the cock E, the operating-stem of which is extended to the forward end of the machine.
In practice valve D is unseated sufficient to admit steam to the lifter, and upon this steam passing through the auxiliary overflow-opening to the outside atmosphere a vacuum is created within the casing, effecting the lifting of the water. The water being discharged from its chamber 10 and taken up by the water-tube 14 of the forcer, the plug 17 of valve D is wit-hdrawn from steam-tube 12 and the full head of steam is admitted to the forcer. This being condensed by the water and the column of steam and water being established, the overiows are cut off by valve D and the column will pass directly to the boiler, unseating check-valve 2S. The capacity of the machine is regulated by the operator by adjusting the combining and delivery tube of the lifter. Thus I am enabled to regulate the capacity of the machine while in operation Without destroying the proper working of the injector.
Heretofore it has been customary to employ a globe-valve in the suction-pipe of an injector, or the steam entering the lifting device is throttled in order to regulate the capacity of the machine. The throttling of Water is detrimental to the velocity imparted to the water by the over-pressure of the outside atmosphere, and the flow through a globevalve is always combined with a loss through friction. In the second instance it has been found exceedingly detrimental to successful results to throttle the steam. Bysimply regulating the space between the steam and combining tubes of the lifter, according to the quantity of water desired, the most perfect` regulation can be effected without subjecting the water to any loss on account of friction and Without interfering with the steam. By reducing or increasing the iniiowing water the temperature, as well as the overpressure of the established jet, is entirely at the will and Linder the control of the operator.
I claim as my invention-- l. Asteam-injectorhavingalongitudinallyadjustable tube for regulating the capacity of the machine, and a cock fitted in and projecting through the injector-casing for effecting the longitudinal adjustment of the tube, as set forth.
2. A steam-injector having its combining and delivery tube adjustable longitudinally, for regulating the capacity of the machine, and a cock fitted in the casing of the injector and engaging such tube, said cock projecting through and beyond said casing, as set forth.
3. The combination With the casing having a partition formed with a threaded opening, of a tube having an external thread working in said opening, a cock fitted in the casing and engaging said tube, and means for turning the cock for effecting the longitudinal movement of the tube, as set forth.
4. A steam-injector having a valve-stem externally threaded and projected through the valve casing, and an internallythreaded member, held away from said casing, with which the thread of the valve-stem is designed to engage, substantially as set forth.
5. A steam-injector having a valve-stem externally threaded, a packing-box in the injector-casing through which said stem is passed, and an internally-threaded member held away from the casing in line with the packing-box, with which member the thread of the valve-stem is designed to engage, substantially as set forth.
6. In a steam-injector having a valve-stem externally threaded, a packing-box through which the stem is projected, a ring surrounding said packing-box and fitted in the injectorcasing, a sleeve having a threaded opening to accommodate the thread of the valve-stem, and arms projecting from said ring supporting said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
