UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL WOHLERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO NATHAN & DREYFUS, OF SAME PLACE.
INJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,158, dated November 9, 1880.
Application filed September 28, 1880. (N0 model.)
To all whom it mayponcern:
Be it known that I, EMIL WoHLERs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Injectors for Feeding Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
M yinvention has relation to a supplemental jet or ejector organized and operating on the general plans set forth in Letters Patent to Gresham, No. 57,057, dated August 7, 1866; and it consists in the improved construction and arrangement, hereinafter shown and described, ot the said device.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of so much of an injector as needed to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on a b, Fig. 1.. Fig. 3 is a section on 0 d, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on cf, Fig. l.
The injector proper (shown in the drawings) is the well-known Friedman injector.
A is the steam-supply conduit or chamber; B, the steam-valve; O, the steam-nozzle; D, the combining-tube; E, the discharge-tube; F, the water-supply tube leading to the water-supply chamber F of the injector, with cock F to control water-supply; G, the overflow-chamber. These parts above named are organized and operate together in the usual H is the auxiliary valve, which controls admission of steam from steam-chamber A to the ejector. The steam admitted by the valve passes through the pipe or conduit I to nozzle J, and thence is discharged into the dischargetube K, whose outer end is in communication with the open air and whose inner end opens into the chamber G, which is in communication with the overflow-chamber G. The operation of these devices is Well known, and requires no detailed explanation.
When the auxiliary valve H is open the steam which passes from the nozzle J into the discharge-tube K forms a vacuum in the overflow-chamber G G, thus causing water to be drawn from the water-supply F F through the combining-tube. As soon as the water escapes from tube K the main valve B is opened and the injector begins its work, and the auxiliary valve H is closed, thus arresting the further operation of the ejector.
The improvements which I have made consist, mainly, in the construction and relative arrangement shown of the water-supply tube F and the auxiliary steam-pipe I, which conduct steam from the valve to the dischargenozzle of the ejector.
The water-supply pipe forks or is divided into two branches at the point where it would otherwise intercept the pipe I, as shown at F F, and the pipe I passes direct from the valve H to the nozzle J between and without contact with the said branches F F, being separated therefrom by a space, as, open to the surrounding air. The steam-pipe l is thus external to the water-supply chamber, and has no contact with the water therein, as it would have were it to pass through said chamber.
The pipe I is secured at one end in a bushing, y, in which is formed the seat for the valve H. This bushing may be formed in one piece with the pipe, if desired. Its other end, which communicates with the discharge-nozzle J of the ejector, enters the box or chamber G, in which the nozzle is located, through a suitable opening, thejoint being made steam-tight by means of stuffing-box and packing, as indicated in Fig. 1.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The injector water supply tube or pipe, branched or forked at the point where it intercepts the steam pipe or conduit which leads from the ejector steam-valve to the ejector discharge nozzle, in combination with said steam-pipe external to the injector watersupply chamber, extending between the branches or forks of said water-supply pipe and separated therefrom by an intervening space, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of September, 1880.
