STEAM-INJ ECTO R.
SPECIFICATION. forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,185, dated May 14, 1901. j
v Application filed May 4, 1900. Serial No. 15,621. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS STICKER, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Injectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in steam-injectors.
One object is to control the water capacity of the machine by the longitudinal adj netment of the combining-tube by means which.
will in the adjustment of such tube also control the overflow.
A further object is to control the boileroutlet by means which also controls the overflow in the longitudinal adjustment of the combining-tube,
A further object is to provide an improved non-lifting exhaust-steam injector in which live steam may be used in addition to the ex-' and 4 are similar views of different forms of o injectors equipped with means for controlling the water capacity and overflow. Referring to the drawings,.F-ig. 1, A designates the casing; a, the exhaust-steam inlet;
a, the water-inlet; a the overflow branch,
and a the boiler-outlet. 1 is the exhauststeam tube, which takes thesteam from chamber 2. 3 is the combining and delivery tube, formed in one piece. The tube3 has'lateral longitudinal overflow-passages 5, which open into spill-chamber 6. The combining and de livery tube is externally threaded at to en- 7 boiler.
back pressure when the ordinary overflowgage a threaded opening in a partition 8 ad jacent to the overflow branch; 1
B is a tapered cock fitted in casing A an designed to effect the longitudinal adjust- 5 ment of the combining-tube, thepositive controlling of the overflow, and the boiler-outlet. This cock is made hollow and formed with ports 9 and 10, which are designed to permit of the passage of the auxiliary and primary 6o overflows into branch (1 When the cock is 1 turned to close theseoverflows, the port 11 therein will coincide with the boiler-outlet a and allow the established jet to pass to the tube, whereby when the cock is turned such I tube is caused to move longitudinally, in
creasing or decreasing the water-inlet'passage between its receiving end and the outlet end ofthetubel. O is an auxiliary overflow branch leading from spill-chamber 6, the outlet thereof being controlled by an automatic check-valve 14. This is for preventing any back pressure I in the cylinder of a steam-engine in case the injector should not be working and the overflow-outlet positively closed by cock B. j D is a tapered cock fitted in the receiving end of the casing and designed to control the 8.0
admission of live steam through a port 15. j This cock engages an elongated steam-tube 16, which projects through exhaust -.steam chamber 2, steam-tube l, and into combining. tube 3. It is externally threaded at 17 and provided with lateral lugs 18, which are en-' gaged by the end of cock D, so that as the latter is turned the tube 16 willbe adjusted longitudinally.- Y I 3 Y In practice water is admitted to the injec-"go.
tor from an overhead tank, whereuponithe.
exhaust-steam enterschamber 2, and passing through tube lintocombiningrtube "3 will spill through passages .5 into chamber 6 and pass to the overflow branched I .Thereupon 959 the operatorturns-acock B,,cutting off the overflow and opening'up the boiler-outlet. .It f H is well understood that exhaust-steam can'be-j utilized only up to a certain degreeand that if a still higher degree of pressure, is to be Too overcome it is necessary to reinforce thepressureof the exhaust-steam by the introd uction,
At its inner end the cock B engages 65. lateral lugs 13 of the combining and delivery of live steam. Hence when higher pressure is desired in the injector the cock D is turned to admit steam to steam-tube 16, which latter is extended well into the combining-tube 3, so as not to interfere with the exhauststeam, but to act in conjunction therewith. For different capacities, temperatures, and pressures the combining and delivery tube may be moved backward and forward to increase or decrease the entrance area of water, and thereby the quantity, the water being th rottled ifcoming under too great a pressure. Different results of working may also be obtained by varying the position of the livesteam tube 16. For the prevention of any back pressure in the cylinder of a steam-engine relief may be had through the auxiliary overflow 0 when the cock B is closed. A ready relief of exhaust and live steam is rendered possible and a restarting of the injector is insured without danger of steam or water entering the cylinder by a back stroke.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a single-tube injector of the positive type equipped with a tapered cock E, the turning of which will close the overflow-ports 19 and 20 and at the same time effect the longitudinal adjustment of the combining-tube 21, and thereby regulate the capacity of the machine-by increasing or decreasing the space between the steam-inlet tube 22 and the receiving end of the combining-tube.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a double-tube injector, also of the positive type. The combining and delivery tube F and the steaminlet tube 23 are all united together or formed practically in one piece, the tube 23 being screwed into the exteriorly-threaded barrel 24., which constitutes part of the combiningtube structure. From barrel 2& projects a lantern extension 25, which is formed with openings to admit steam from chamber 26 and with slots to receive lugs 27 of a cook 28, fitted in the casin g. From this cool: projects a spindle 29, which extends into steam-tube 23. The delivery end of the combining and delivery tube is externally threaded at 30 and engages a threaded opening in partition 31, adjacent to overflow branch 32. Hence by the turning of cook 28 the steam-inlet tube and combining and delivery tube will be moved longitudinally, effecting the removal of spindle 29 from the steam-inlet tube and the closing of the overflow branch 32, the delivery end of the combining and delivery tube being screwed up against the partition 33 at the boiler-outlet end of the casing.
In practice the steam admitted to chamber 26 will enter the tubes of the lifter G and the discharge into chamber 3i will find its outlet through the combining-tube E and overflow branch 32, whereupon the operator by turning cook 28 will effect the longitudinal movement of such combining and delivery tube, admitting steam through steam-tube 23 and cutting 01% the overflow.
In Fig. 4: I have indicated another type of double-tube injectors, showing the application of a tapered cock H for effecting the longitudinal adjustment of the combining and delivery tube 35, the control of the overflowports, and the boiler-outlet.
It will be observed thatin the several forms herein outlined the working capacity of the machine is controlled by the longitudinal adjustment of the combining and delivery tube and that such adjustment also controls the overflow, and in the instances shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4 such adjustment also controls the outlet to the boiler.
I claim as my invention 1. A steam-injector having one or more of its tubes longitudinally movable, and a cock for effecting such longitudinal movement and controlling the overflow-outlet.
2. A steam-injector having a longitudinallymovable combining-tube and means for simultaneously adjusting such tube, controlling the overflow and the boiler-outlet.

An exhaust-injector having a cock controlling the admission of live steam, a longitudinally movable steam tube extending through the exhaust-steam chamber and into the combining-tube in advance of the point of entrance of exhaust steam, said steamtube being engaged by said cock, whereby when the latter is turnedthe tube will be moved longitudinally, substantially as set forth.
