Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES BOHN OROFFORD, OF VIOKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 674,134, dated May 14:, 1901. Application filed February 11 1901. Serial No. 46,872. lllo modeld To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES BoHN CROF- FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing- Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact; description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to washing-machines.
One object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparativelyinexpensive of production and one which will readily adjust itself to the quantity of clothes being washed and permit of the desired degree of pressure being applied in the operation of the rubber.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of rubber which will more thoroughly and expeditiously cleanse the clothes.
I/Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved washingmachine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view with the rubber elevated, in which position free access may be had to the suds-box for the insertion or removal of the goods to be washed. Fig. 3 is adetail perspective view of the bottom or working face of the rubber.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the suds-box, which may be of any well-known or approved construction, and 2 the segmental bottom, which is preferably transversely fluted.
3 denotes studs projecting upwardly from the ends of the suds-box, and 4 denotes levers having their outer ends pivoted to said studs and adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the side pieces of the suds-box.
5 denotes the standards of the segmental rubber 6, which standards are pivoted inter- In operation the rubber is caused to move over the fluted bottom of the suds-box by reciprocating the operating-lever, and more or less pressure may be applied to this rubber by bearing down upon said lever in the act of reciprocating.
When it is desired to gain access to the suds-box for the purpose of placing into the same or removing therefrom clothing, the operating-lever, together with the lovers 4, is swung back in the position shown in Fig. 2, when free access may be had to the interior of the suds-box.
While any kind of rubber may be used, that shown in Fig. 3 is preferred, and it consists of the end pieces a, connected together by rollers b and fixed slats c, the roller b being fluted longitudinally and the slats o being fluted or grooved spirally in opposite directions to each other and arranged in sets, the slats c alternating with the rollers I).
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation. I
Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made Within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y i The combination with a suds-box and segmental bottom, of studs projecting upwardly from the outer sides of said box near one end, levers pivoted at one end to said studs and extending parallel-with and resting upon the upper edge of the sides of said suds-box, a diate the ends thereof, substantially as set to rubber having standards pivoted interinediforth.
ate their ends to the inner sides of said ie- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set vers, a horizontally-disposed operating-lever my hand in presence of two subscribing witpivoted at its inner ends to the upper ends of nesses.
said standards, and links having their lower CHARLES BOI-IN (JROFFORD. ends pivoted to the outer ends of the first- \Vitnesses: named levers and having their upper ends R. 0. GRANT,
pivoted to the secondmmned lever interme- C. H. STIBB.
