UNITED STATES PATENT UEEICE.
LOUIS 'BOOHE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
I CANDLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 673,467, dated May 7, 1901.
Application filed July 30, 1900.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS BOOHE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in p the county of Oookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in candle-holders of the kind adapted to be used on Christmas trees in lighting the same.
The invention consists, substantially,in the novel method of securing the candle to the holder and of attaching the same to the branches of the tree, as will be hereinafter fully described and set forth, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a miniature representation of a Christmas tree, to the branches of which the holder is adapted to be attached. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the complete holder with a candle inserted, the holder being shown of normal size and the socket-body a section taken on the line 2 20f Fig. 5; Fig. 3, alike view, with the largest or standard size of candle set in the uppermost part of the holder; Fig. 4, a transverse section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3, showing the inner longitudinal ribs, the edges of which are adapted to secure the candle to the holder. Fig. 51s a plan view of the socket-body and drip-cup, and. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are designed to illustrate the peculiar mode of attaching the holder to the tree-branches.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the socket-body of the holder,- which, as will be seen, is formed to taper from near the top comically downward to the bottom, the upper partof the socket being curved outward to form a cup for the candle-drippings. Said socket-body is provided with inner longitudinal ribs 2,which project radially therefrom. Said ribs are formed thin, with sharp edges adapted to penetrate the candle 3 when inserted between them and to hold it firmly in position, and by reason of their being conically formed, wider apart at the top, said socket-ribs are adapted to receive and hold Serial No. 25,329- (No model.
the various sizes of candles manufactured for the purpose. Said socket-body is also provided at the top with a secondary set of projecting ribs 4, made shorter than the first described, and are wider apart, being adapted only for the largest or standard make of can'- dle 5, as shown in Fig. 3. Said socket-body, ribs, and drip-cup are adapted to be formed integral from any suitable material, as tin, glass, or iron, either by stamping or casting, as may be found most desirable.
6 is a wire or rod the upper end portion of which is rigidly secured to the bottom of the socket-body, the lower end of said wire being provided with a counterbalance-Weight 7, by means of which the holder is held in an upright position when attached to a branch 8 of the tree. Said wire has a free end portion 9, which extends a distance down from the socket, and which, together with a portion of the body-wire, is relatively bent and twisted spirally to form a loop 10 at the bottom of the socket-body. Said wires are in contact at a point a, Fig. 2, and from thence are still further spirally bent until the extremity of the free end portion and body of the wire stand apart, forming agap N, Fig. 6, into which the branch of the tree is inserted and which in its course to the final point at the base of the socket springs the Wires apart at the contact-point and which close together thereafter, inclosing the branch in a continuous spiral loop, the action being in effect a screwing of the holder on the branch of the tree, the holder making about a half-turn in theprocess, as will be understood from an inspection of the drawings, the arrangement being such that the holder cannot be easily thrown from the tree and is convenient of attachment thereto.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination in acandle-holder of a candle-socket, a Wire rod rigidly secured to the lower end of said socket, said wire rod -tween portions of the twoarms, said spiral IOO 10 and a counterpoiseweight secured to said wire and adapted to keep said candle-holder in an upright position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS BOCHE.
