TOBACCO-PIPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,909, dated April 9, 1901.

Application filed August 17, 1900. Serial No. 27,223. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern..

Be it known that I, LOUIS B. HEEP, a citi# zen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of'this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in tobacco-pipes, my object being to provide a pipe adapted to be easily cleaned; and to this end the invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section taken through my improved pipe. showing the movable part of the bowl in the open position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line oc Fig. 1, showing the locking device raised to the horizontal position.

The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.

Let the numeral 5 designate the bowl of the pipe, which is divided on a line A into two parts 5a and 5C. The part 5a is fast on the stem 6, while the part 5c is hinged to the part 5a, as shown at 7, and adapted to open to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. The line of division of the two parts of the bowl is so arranged that when the part 5 is open a cleaning device may be passed through the opening in the stem without coming in contact with the part 5c of the bowl. Hence it will be observed that when the part 5 of the bowl is open the bowl, as well as the stem, may be thoroughly cleaned with very little trouble.

In order that the two parts of the bowl may iit tightly together when closed,a packing-rin g B of any suitable material may be applied Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the pipe,v

to the edge of one of the parts, so that when 5o the part 5c is closed a perfectly-tight joint may be formed. The part 5c may be locked in the closed position in any suitable manner.

As shown in the drawings, a U-shaped yoke C is pivotally connected with the part 5c on 55 opposite sides and is adapted to pass over the part 5a when the part 5c is closed. To assist in the locking operation, a small knob or button D is applied to the part 5a. When the yoke is moved down over this projection 6o or button, the latter forms a stop adapted to maintain the yoke in the locking position. The yoke is preferably composed of springwire and has a coil C' formed at its center in order to allow it to yield to a certain extent as it is moved down on the part 5a.

It must be understood that I do not limit the invention to the details of construction herein shown, as I am aware that many modifications may be employed without departing 7o from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A tobocco-pipe having its bowl divided on a plane beginning below the top of the bowl in front and extending diagonally, rearwardly and downwardly, the two parts being hinged together at the bottom, and suitable means for locking the parts in the closed position.

A tobacco-pipe having its bowl divided 8o on a plane beginning below the top of the bowl in front and extending diagonally, rearwardly and downwardly, the two parts being hinged together at the bottom, and suitable means for locking the parts in the closed position, comprising a lookin g device which consists of a U-shaped yoke whose extremities are pivotally connected with the larger part of the bowl and adapted to pass over the other part which is provided with a projection 9o adapted to maintain the yoke in the adjusted position.
