Be it known that I, DANIEL P.'FARNHAM, of Janesville, in the county of Rock, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved Bi'oom-Head;and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a broom as it appears when made with my broom-head or improvement.

Figure 2 is a side view as it appears when unfilled.

Figure 3, is a longitudinal section of same.

Figure 4 is an end view of the same, showing the clamps distended and ready for the corn; and

Figure 5 is also an end view, showing the clamps contracted as when embracing the corn.

The nature of my invention consists in the use of one or more pairs of metallic clamps, operated by screws, to compress and hold the corn in a. broom, when constructed and used substantially as hereinafter described.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I attach in any secure manner to the lower end a of the broom-handle A a metallic cap-piece, B, constructed 'of the form shown, through the end of which pass the screws C-C, that secure and operate the elliptic clamp D.

This clamp I prefer to make of spring wire, and in one piece. In addition to the clamp D, I use a second clamp, E, that is secured and operated, like the first, by screws F, that work directly in the handle A. The clamp E is also elliptic in form, but I prefer, however, to make it in two pieces, in the form of clevis-clamps G and G, hinged at c, as shown; or each of the clevis pieces, as G, may be made in two pieces,-0l and e, hinged atf. To operate the clamp D, I generally employ two pairs of screws, as shown, while the clamp E requires only one pair. The screws of each pair have their threads playing into each other, as shown in fig. 3, thereby avoiding the difiicult necessity of providing a strong and suitable female screw either for the screws 0 C, in the thin cap 13, or for the screws F in the soft wood of the handle A.

To use my device, it is only necessary to run out the screws so as to expand the clamps, and then to closely fill them with corn trimming, and winding the ends g, fig. 1, with cord, by hand or by machinery, in any of the ordinary suitable methods. Then, by running in the screws so as to cause the clamps to firmly clasp the corn, the broom is ready for use. I prefer to allow the last layer of corn to cover the upper clamp E, as thereby the broom presents a much better and lighter appearance.

The object of winding and trimming the corn, as shown at g, fig. 1, being simply to give the broom a finished appearance, I sometimes omit this portion of the process, and instead thereof cover the ends with one of the sheet metallic caps in ordinary use for that purpose.

What I claim as new, and for which I desire Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. The combination and arrangement of the handle A, cap B, and the clamp D, secured to the cap and operated by the screws 0 G, that have their threads working into each other, when the whole are constructed, arranged, and used in connection with the process of winding or covering the ends f of the corn, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination and arrangement of the handle A, cap B, and clamps D and E, operated by the screws C and F, when the whole are constructed and used substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
