Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Justifying Devices for Game-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an adjusting and supporting device for game-boards, and it is embodied in the construction hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.

Game-boards, as distinguished from gametables, are relatively light structures, which are usually placed upon tables or other supports, from which they can be removed with but little effort. In such boards where movable objects are employed in playing a game or games it is necessary to have the board held steady and level, and in boards where pockets are employed it is necessary to so elevate the board above the table-top that the pockets may hangfree without coming in contact with the table-top. My invention is designed as an adjunctto such game-boards and is intended to do awaywith the necessity of placing books or other objects under the boards to elevate them. In United States Letters Patent dated October 16, 1900, and numbered 659,809, I have shown a block for this purpose; but by wide experience it has been found that the blocks were objectionable in that they were of uniform height and were not susceptible of vertical adjustment unless associated with some detachable object, such as a book. In my present invention I have overcome the various objections heretofore existing and have constructed an adjusting and supporting device which is susceptible of being increased or diminished in height by manipulating the same directly with the hands with but little trouble, and so while the same is in position supporting the board, and, further, by forming the outer ends of the device with large areas, so that tipping is largely avoided.

As far as I am advised, heretofore billiardtables have been provided with adjusting devices adapted to be attached to the legs of the table; but none of such constructions are susceptible of general use in connection with game-boards.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the justifying support or leg. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the support and a section of the game-board.

A designates a block conveniently cylindrical in cross -section and oblong. This block is formed with a broad flat under snr-. face or bottom and has a cylindrical threaded cavity a, extending to a point near the lower end.

B designates a companion block or head of substantially the same formation as the pa rt A and has extending from its under side a threaded pin or stem 1), adapted to fit the threaded bore of the part A. The upper face of the part B is flat.

By forming the two blocks with broad flat outer ends or ends having large area the adjuster is held firmly on its supporting-snrface and in turn holds the board steady, preventing its creeping and jarring.

In construction the vertical length and diameter of the part B is such as to form an easy grasping -surface, it being slightly shorter than the part A, but of substantially the same diameter. The construction and relative size of the parts enables the operator, after placing the board upon the supports, to take hold of the respective parts with his hands, turn one relative to each other with but little trouble, and thereby elevate the upper portion or part, and when it is desired to remove the supports the parts may be adjusted in close relation, so as to form'a compact device capable of being easily stored away. The ends of the parts A and B are conveniently provided with pads of leather or the like, as at D. The well-known construction of game-board is that which has a frame extending above and below the board, as shown in Fig. 3, the board being represented at C. In this form of board the smaller end of the justifierorsupport may be conveniently placed downward, so that the operator will have less difficulty in reaching the upper part after the support has been placed below the board.

The exact relative size of the blocks may be altered and the particular shape of the exterior may be changed without departing from the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'

1. As an article of manufacture, a detached adjustable support for game-boards comprising in its construction two members having a screw connection and of a shape and size to be grasped by the hands and each capable of being rotated independently of the other when in position and each member having its outer end of an area to form a steadying holdingsurface for the support and the board carried thereby, substantially as described.

2. As an article of manufacture, a detached adjustable support for game-boards comprising in its construction two members having a screw'connection and of a shape and size to be grasped by the hands and turned relative to each other when in position and each member having its outer end of an area toform a steadying holding-surface for the support and the board carried thereby, and pads on the outer ends of the members, substantially as described.
