UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER HENRY JACOBUS, OF MILLSTADT, ILLINOIS.
CHIMNr-:Y-TOP EXTENSION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,483, dated April 9, 1901.
Application filed January 7, 1901. Serial No. 42.353. iNo model.)
To all 711/110777/ it Worry concern:
Beit known that I, PETER HENRY JAooBUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millstadt, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Top Extensions,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingl a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in chimney-top extensions; and it consists in the novel construction of extension more fully set forth in the specification, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of one face of a chimney, showing my invention applied thereto, the parts being adjusted for the largest dimension of the chimney. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. l, showing the narrow side of the chimney. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the device. Fig. 4 is an end view of one of the angle-pieces and a corresponding view of the corner-piece embracing the same. Fig. 5 is a face elevation of one of the angle-pieces, and Fig. 6 is a top plan thereof.
The object of my invention is to construct a simple, durable, and practical chimney top or extension which can be accurately adjusted to chimneys of various dimensions, such extensions being designed to protect the chim ney against disintegration by the elements, at the same time giving the chimney proper an artistic and ornamental appearance. The present device is constructed of a series of adjustable sections, whereby when properly assembled they may be made to embrace and protect chimneys of different dimensions.
In detail the invention may be described as follows:
Referring to the drawings, l represents one of the corner pieces or sections ofl my device, and 2 the intermediate or adjustable angle piece or section, there being four of each kind. The corner-pieces are virtually comprised of three faces meeting at a common corner, the vertical faces preferably Haring outwardly, so as to give the iinished top an ornamental appearance. The bases of the vertical faces are formed into outwardly-fluted channels l. The sections 2 are provided at the bottom with the fluted channels 2', adapted to rest against the inner faces of the channels l'. The upper portions of the vertical faces of the sections 2 are provided with lateral slotted extensions or arms 3 3, the channels 2 being provided with slots 3 3', parallel to the slots of the extensions 3. The upper or horizontal faces of the angle-pieces 2 are provided with a series of bolt-holes 4 for the reception of the bolts carried by the corner-pieces l, as apparent from the drawings. The slots of the extensions 3 and the slots 3' are designed to receive the bolts carried by the corner-pieces, the nuts 5 of the bolts being driven home after the several sections have once been properly adjusted with reference to the dimensions of any particular chimney. By providing the basal channels l' 2 for the heads of the bolts the latter are kept out of contact with the brickwork, and the cover or extension as a whole thereby tits and embraces the vertical walls of the chimney more snugly and prevents the lodging of dirt and moisture between the chimney and extension. The horizontal faces of the corner-pieces and angie-pieces overlap the upper edge of the chimney, so that the same is absolutely shielded from the elements. The whole forms a perfect hood or cover for the chimney, being adjustable to any size of chimney within certain limits. I do not, of course, wish to be understood as limiting myself to the specific details here enumerated, as the same may in a measure be departed from without departing from the spirit of my invention. For example, the slots for the reception of the bolts maybe formed in the corner-pieces and the bolt-holes in the angle-pieces, as is obvious.
Having described lny invention, what I claim isl. Achimney-top extension comprising suitable corner-pieces having lower outwardlyfluted channels, intermediate angle-pieces having similar lower uted channels, slots formed respectively in the vertical faces and iiuted channels of the angle-pieces, bolt-holes formed in the corresponding portions of the' corner-pieces, whereby the several parts may be adjustably secured to one another, the fluted channels being adapted to receive the heads of the bolts to avoid contact of the latter with the brickwork, thereby resulting in a tight joint below said channels, between the IOO Si @finies` brickwork and the extension, substantially as set forth.
2. Achimneytop extension comprising suitable corner-pieces having lower outwardlyuted channels, intermediate angle-pieces having similar lower uted ohaunels, slots formed in the last-named channels, lateral slotted extensions or arms formed at the upper portions of the vertical faces of the anglo-pieces, a series of bolt-holes formed in the upper faces of the angle-pieces, the several parts adapted tovbe adj usted and secured by bolts carried by the oornerpieoes and passed through the Several slots and bolt-holes of the angle-pieces substantially as set forth. 15 O In testimony whereof I afX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
