FORK ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,393, dated April 2, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ADONIRAM J. COLBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fork Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in fork attachments; and its object is to provide a device that can be readily attached to or detached from an ordinary fork, to provide for vertically adjusting the same on the fork, to provide means for preventing slipping of the clip on the fork-handle, to avoid breakage of the fork, and to provide the device with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

My device consists, essentially, of a plate adapted to be adj ustably attached to the rear of the fork-tines, braces extending upward from the respective sides of the plate, and a clip adapted to adjustably engage the handle of the fork, aswill more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a fork with my device attached; Fig. 2, a perspective of the same, and Fig. 3 an enlarged perspective of my device detached.

Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.

A represents the handle, and B thetines, of an ordinary fork.

G is a plate of metal of suitable dimensions extending horizontally backward from the tines of the fork and having its rear portion curved upward, as at D. The front part of the plate is turned upward at right angles, forming a vertical portion E to adjustably engage the rear of the fork-tines. The upper part of this vertical portion is turned forward at right angles, as at F, and divided into forwardly-projecting portions to pass between the fork-tines and engage the sides of the same to prevent lateral displacement of the plate. Extending diagonally upward from the rear portion D of the plate is a brace H, to the upper end of which brace is attached a clip I, adapted to surround the fork-handle A and longitudinally adjustable thereon. A second brace G extends from the vertical part E of the plate along the rear of the bandle and with its upper end attached to the clip I. The plate is adjustably secured to the fork-tines by means of a bar J, engaging the front of the tines opposite the portion E of the plate, and a bolt K, extending through the bar and plate. This device is readily adjustable vertically on the fork by slackening the bolts in the bar and clip and-again tightening the same after adjustment.

The brace G prevents the clip I from sliding upward on the handle when the plate is used as a fulcrum for the fork. Said brace also serves to take the strainoff the shank Which connects the head of the fork with the handle, which shank is liable to break when any of the usual attachments are used as a fulcrum.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination ofa plate, converging braces extending upward from the respective sides of the plate, means for adjust-ably attaching the plate to the tines of a fork, and means for adjustably attaching the upper ends of the braces to the handle of a fork, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a plate having an upwardly-curved rear portion and a vertical front portion, braces extending upward from the respective front and rear portions of the plate, means for attaching the upper ends of the braces to a fork-handle, and means for attaching the vertical front portion of the plate to the fork-tines, substantially as described.

3. The combination of a plate having an upwardly-curved rear portion, and a vertical front portion, a bar opposite said front portion, a bolt passing through the barand plate, braces extending upward from the respective front and rear portions of the plate, and a clip secured to the upper ends of the braces, substantially as described.

4. The combination of a plate having an upwardly-curved rear portion and a vertical front portion, and also having forwardly-proj ecting portions on the front portion, convergin g braces extending upward from the respective front and rear portions of the plate, means for attaching the plate to the tines of a fork, and means for attaching the upper ends of the braces to the handle of a fork, substantially as described.

5. In combination with a fork, a plate extending rearwardly from the tines of a fork and adjustably attached thereto, a .brace exbar and bolt to attach the plate to the fork,

a brace extending upward from the rear of the plate and a clip attached to the upper end of the brace and adjustably engaging the handle of the fork, substantially as described. '7. In combination with a fork, a plate having an upwardly-curved rear portion, a vertical forward portion engaging the rear .of the fork-tines, and forwardly-projecting portions between the tines, a bar opposite the vertical portion of the plate, a bolt passing through the bar and plate, a brace extending upward from the rear of the plate to the handle, a brace extending from the vertical portion of the plate along the rear of the handle to the upper end of the first-named brace, and aclip attached to the upper ends of the braces and adjustably engaging the handle, substantially as described.
